SIR WILLIAM FOX.

The ' Lyttclton Times' ill's the f,-.l'nWniu-article on Sir William Fox's needing at Wang-uini:—Sir Willlmn Fox has given up to faction what was-frheant for mankind, and he is about to reap his reward. His late constituents will have none of him. The value of his ancient reputation lias dwindled down to forty hands out of a meeting of five hundred. That is a cir- ~ cumsiance unparalleled in the history of the Colony. The majority against Ministers in the House of Representatives lias boen called the greatest possible condemnation of the Ministry. The treatment of the chief of the Opposition is a strong adverse comment upon such 'an argument. It shows that the Opposition may come back without its chief, if it is also in a minority—and there are now signs that such an event is extremely probable—what will become of the strong condemnation passed on Ministers by the late Parliament ? Tt will give place to an argument of very different import. The fact is that the appeal to the coun'ry left the Opposition with vituperation as their only weapon, and the example made of their most perfect master in the use of that weapon shows that vituperation does not pay- If the general voice of the o constituencies agrees with the verdict of "the Wangamri electorate, the country may hope to see in the Parliamentary business of the future less vituperation and more work. The political atmosphere requires to be cleared of that easy gaseous product of malignant fluency.
