LAND TAX APPEAL COURT.
A must glaring mistake ls:w occurred in conncttion with this court, and one which we hope will at once be rectified, tv- will be observed that flic ratepayers in the Geraldine Road Hoard di-trict arc to attend an Appeal Court- at Ge-.alniue on Thursday, 28th hist., mid the ratepayers in Mount Wool District and Tcmuka ili-tnet are to attend a court at Geraldine on Friday, 29th inst. What reason can be given fur dragging ratepayers ail the way from Milford and all around Temuka up to Geraldine, a distance of many miles ? Why was it. not arranged to hold a meeting at the Courthouse, Temuka, instead of Geraldine ? Surely this district is of sufficient importance to have its interests bolter attended to than this. AT ho is to h amc for this bungling ? It is not too late to alter lids, and to have a meeting at Temuka as well. If the meeting for allQhree Boards had been arranged to tSfcp place bin one day, it would have been hut to have Geraldine alone one Aafk aivife Mount Peel and Temuka next day, is l&tlJzshort of an insult to the ratepayers -in this large and important district r Why was not Mount Peri and Geraldine made to meet in one day and Temuka next day ? This matter needs looking into.
TEMUKA EGAD BOARD
A special meeting of the Board took place on Monday last. Present—Messrs Talbot (chairman), Ensor, Quinn, and Barker.
The Chairman explained’ the business he had called the Boat'd together to transact, viz., the consideration of a report of Mr Roberts in re the concrete work on certain bridges now under erection by the Board.
The Chairman having road Mr Roberts' report, it was resolved that, in consequence of the report being favorable to the. work, Air Radford’s cheques that had been withhold from last ordinary meeting bo paid.
Mr Barker gave notice that he would, At the next ordinary meeting of iho Board, move a resolution on the subject of dealing with the money voted by the Board for entertaining Sir- George Grey last year,"X and. .which the author disallowed. ■ L The Clerk-*was instructed to look up by next Court-day rdf correspondence on the subject of the arrangement between Mr Hayhurst and the Board relative to the supply of shingle in the Milford district. The following is Mr Roberts’ report : Timarn, August 16, 1879. The Chairman Temuka Road Board.
Shy—l have the honor to inform you that, in compliance with’ your instructions that I should examine and report on the quality of the concrete in various bridge works done, and being clone, in the Temuka Eoad Board District, I, in company with your Surveyor, inspected the following yesterday, viz.:— No. 1, bridge at Sod Town, completed — contract No. 42.
No. 2, bridge near Paterson’s, completed—contract No. 15.
No. 3, three bridges on APCallum’s road, being done —contract No. 21. ■ No. 4, bridge, Langridge’s rond, being done —contract No. 9.
No. 5, culvert on Allen’s road, being done —contract No. 47.
In regard to the wo ks numbered .3 and 5, the quality of the concrete is very fair indeed.
No. 4. bridge on Langridge’s road, shows evidence of portions of the si:ingle not being so clean as is evidently, and the outside has been affected by the frost; it would have been better also bad a little more care been observed in the mixing, so as to prevent the larger st mes ' collecting together. On the whole, however, the work is not otherwise than I should have passed, bad it been under
my cuarge. Of No. 2, bridge near Paterson’s, the face of the concrete has evidently been much washed before being properly set, and thus given it a had appearance, but I do not think the stability of the work is affected by it. Of No. *l, bridge at Sod Town, the same remarks will apply as given above on No. 4, Langridge’s bridge, the shingle in two places appearing to have been a little dirty: the concrete, however, throughout has set verywcll for the time elapsed since it was built.
I should shite that. I thoroughly tested the soundness of the whole of the concrete above referred to,, and with satisfactory results: neither did I observe any signs of settlement in any of the works, or anything to influence the stability of the same. I also noticed the shingle then on the ground for making concrete, and can testify to its being well suited for the purpose. I have the honor to be, sir, Youi' obedient sercant, Tnos. Eobeets, C.E.
