FACT OR FICTION ?

It seems (says a Home paper) that the great announcement which has reached us from Queensland of a discovery which will-provide us with fresh meat upon entirely new principles is little better than a hoax. Ths onus o proof now rests upon Signor Rotura, whose visit to South America may yet provide him with the mysterious simples or plants by which he hopes to carry out his plan. The herb by which animals may be frozen into insensibility without killing, and restored to full vigorous life months afterwards, will be a valuable article—when it is found. To “ congeal” or suspend the function of prize bullocks and fat sheep, and bring them back to life in the carcase butcher’s shop, would undoubtedly redress the balance between the Old Word and the new as to food supply. But, as has been pointed out by scientific, and it must be confessed sceptical, critics, there is really no limit to the application of this marvellous drug. Not alone would it solve the difficulty of feeding cattle during the winter months inasmuch as the live stock might all bo congealed in the spring, but human beings might, when weary of their present associations, descend temporarily into the retirement of the tomb. The man who was in advance of his age, as the Times observes, might be congealed until the age had overtaken or passed beyond him—“ a father, who had been shelved for a while in the family vault, might be restored to children older than himself.” These possibilities, are attractive enough to make many of us wish to hear more of Signor Rotura and his discovery.
