TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary niuiiinly nun-ting of the Hoard was hold on T nos nay, August ot;i. The mouthers present wore Me-sra. Talbot (Chairman), liayiiurst, Ensor, Barker, and Quinn. The minutes of the last meeting were read and continued. _ Upon reading the minutes of the special meeting which took place on July 14, it ' was f-miHi that a nonce ot motion given by Mr. Er,.sor relative to a resolution passed.by r.he Hoard on the subject ut uistiibniing the fixed deposits ot tae Board, coualiy amongst'the V auks m-ilie event of other banks starting a hiv.ncii in Tomuka, viz., “ That he would at the next ordinary of the Board propose that, the resolution passed relative to the fixed deposits at the. bank be rescinded,had through an error not been placed uponMhc minutes. Ihis error, with the full \ concurrence of the Board, having been rectified, tue munites in the amended form -were continued. X'SrUTATIOXS. Mr. Gladstone interviewed tiro Board on the subject of the transfer of the hind for making a road through his ground. The" Clerk reported that he had received plans, etc., of the survey Irony Messrs. Bruce and Wilkin, and after consideration with Mr. Hay hurst' had made them over to Mr. Johnston, solicitor, with the neccs- • smy instructions to carry out the conveyancc or the laird to the Board in the usual .manner. a A When the Board had a cheque filled up and paid over to Air. Gladstone for The sum that had been agreed upon, namely £loo— Benbow attended to consult with the Board about the cutting made through his land at Langridge’s Bridge. The matter was ordered to stand over till next Board meeting, in order to allow the Chairman, with the surveyor and Mr. Benbow to visit the spot and come to some arrangement relative to the amount (if any) of compensation Mr. Benbow may be entitled to. , Messrs. Cliff and Budd interviewed the Board to protest against the Board’s contractors talcing shingle out 0f... a certain pit near Winchester, stating 'that if the shingle was taken out of the pit mentioned it would be likely to bring the Waihi River into the crock, thus causing them great loss. Mr. Barker proposed, and Air. Ensor seconded, and it was carried—That the overseer be instructed to inform the contractors (Geraldine road) that the Board nave not instructed them to take shingle from Reserve No. 319. That, they do not approve of shingle being taken from there, and that if the contractors continued to do so it must be at their own risk ; and Messrs. (Jliif and Budd be written to slating that the Board have never authorised contractors to take shingle from the place complained of, and they (the Board) would accept no responsibility in'the matter, but lint Messrs. Cliff and Build would have boon perfectly justified in, stopping the shingle from being taken,if their was liable to bo damaged thereby. Air. fc>. Barker attended with reference to a chvui against the river-bed, and stated that ho believed Air. McCaskill objected to the ’protective work in question being car-, ried on to his land, and under the circumstances, as an equally suitable place coui#— be got on his Kind, he was quite willing that the work should be carried across and the earth taken from his land. Resolved that lias course bo adopted, end the contractors see Air. Barker before proceeding with Che work. Resolved also with reference to the creek at his place, that tenders will be called for -ho work next Board day, and will then bo accepted, upon Messrs. Barker and Crow handing iu on that day a written guarantee of half the cost of the name. Air. Fried attended to ask the Board to have a matter attended to on a road near his place, stati g •: that,, in consequence of the drain pipes not giving sufficient water way in Hood time, the water was dammed back ou his land. Ordered that the surveyor examine into the matter, and report at next Board day. Air. D. Young interviewed tho Board, asking to have Seaton’s road formed. Ordered that tenders be culled for the same. Tho Clerk reported that he had received the plans, etc., of the .different new roads that had been ordered by the Board from Messrs. Bruce and Wilkins, and had made the one referring to Air. Gladstone’s land over to Air. Johnson, for the purpose of conveyancing. It was resolved to aaange with Alessrs. Tate and Hall, Timaru, lo have the roads through Messrs. Barker and Nicholson’s laud conveyed to the Board. AIT. AI Malarky attended to ask the Board their intention with respect to the damage done to his fence, through turning the water down the sidoof the road instead of through its natural channel, saying he would be satisfied with £lB. Resolved that £l3 be paid to Alalarky next Board-day, if claim be found just; also that the Clerk draw up a letter, to be signed by jaersons through whoso laud the natural channels run, giving the Board permission to open the channel through their land to keep it open in perpetuity. From Mr Kogan, solicitor, Gisborne, claiming on behalf of the late Owen Migliiin’s executors the sum of £73, alleged to be due from the Board to Owen Aligfian. From Mr Deßonzy complaining that a contractor had been taking shingle out of a pit near 'Winchester, which is likely to brim; Ale Waihi River down upon his Amd. From Messrs Murray Bros., re water race. Resolved that the surveyor endeavour to arrange for Mr F. Barker, or some other person who saw the race in flood, to accompany him to the spot with Mr Murray, and to report on the matter next Board clay. ''N From Messrs Harrop and others, asff ing to have Stmlholmn street in' the Arowhenua township formed. The surveyor was instructed to prepare specifications. _ At the suggestion of Mr Barker, the surveyor was instructed to have speciflcations prepared for the Mill roaa
Orari. Mr Barker asked to leave the road by his place made the whole width, stating that it could easily be done by throwing up the soil on sides, as there were men at work close by, and could be done at a reasonable expense by employing those men. The overseer was ordered to have it done.
A discussion having taken place on the subject of supplying people with material forputting culverts or bridges across the road ditches to enable them to have access to their paddocks, the Board resolved that in very special cases, where they considered there was, through any necessary action of the Board, a reasonable claim on the part of the claimant, they would accede to it.
Mr Benbow’s application for a few pipes was granted. Mr Quinn’s application for a few drain pipes was agreed to by his paying the cost price. Mr T. Heberts, C.E., of Tim am, waited upon the Board with a plan and report of the projected Opihi bridge, which the Board approved of, and the Clerk was instructed to write a letter to the Levels Board, asking them to appoint a clay to meet a deputation from this Board to confer on the matter with a view of taking steps for carrying the work out. In conformity with the notice of motion standing in his name, Mr Ensor proposed, and Mr Hnyliurst seconded, That the resolution passed last ordinary mooting of the Board, re division of fixed deposits, be rescinded. Carried.
Mr Ensor proposed, Mr Barker seconded, and it was carried, That Mr Radiord's cheques in payment for building bridges at Paterson's road and Sod Town be not paid, and that the Surveyor and Clerk of Works be censured for allowing such work to be done.
The. surveyor’s report having been read and considered, the following works were ordered, tenders to be called for making a ford on the Kakalm road. Cheques for L 1532 Is 5d were passed for payment. The following tender’s were accepted:— No 58—Gash and Horgan, atSs lid per chain. No 50 —Gash and Horgan. at 5s 4d per chain, No GO—G. Crozicr, for L 23. No G1 —J. Blythe, for L 79 IGs. No G2—C. Flynn, for Ll7O. No G3 —J. Malcombsone, at IGs Gd per chain. The Board then adjourned.
