PRESENTATION.
A meeting of thg subscribers to a testimonial to J. G. iFildp, Esq., Agent of the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka, took place at the Star i Hotel last night—Mr Johnstone, solicitor, in the chair. The chairman, gin a very neat speech, congratulated Mr Fildes on the love and respect in which he was held by the townspeople—not, only as a banker, but as a gentleman and a citizen. He (the chairman) expressed the great pleasure it gave him to have the honor to present him with a gold lever watch and albert chain, after 1 --which the|company drank the health of Mr Fildes ajajl family, expressing a wish that prosperity may follow him in his new sphere of, v labour. Mr Fildes, in replying, stated that he was taken by surprise at the expression of kindness towards him in such a substantial manner. He said he could not express how much he felt gratified at this unexpected token of their esteem. Hj may not have pleaded everybody, but. he conscientiously tried to discharge his duty, and he had always the welfare of the citizens of Temuka and surrounding districts at heart. He had trying times to contend with, which caused him often no little anxiety, often more perhaps than mauy of his fellow citizens would be willing to believe ; however, the way in which they received him this night|vas ample reward for all this care. He w-<|uJd always retain a fond remembrance; q| the people of Temuka. The chairing then proposed the health of Mr Fildes' temporary successor, Mr Mackay. After a song from Mr Tombs Mr Mackay, in a very good speech, replyed to the toast, stating that he was extremely well pleased to see the kind feeling that evidently existed between the people ol Temuka and their banker. A number of songs and toasts terminated a very pleasing evening.
