The arresting constables gave evidence as to catching them in the act of ploughing. In Court the prisoners said Te Whiti’s word was law, and they had to obey him. What over evil they had committed was by his fault. The case was adjourned till tomorrow. One prisoner gave himself up as willing to go to Wellington, and was delighted at the chance. The report that natives were ploughing at Bayley’s was unfounded. It is believed the natives are building a large pah, about two miles oil the main road at Hawcra, and that they are ploughing land there.

Alexandra, July 8. An important meeting was held at Hikurangi on Monday, after the meeting at Te Kopua. The object of the meeting was to consider the policy of Rcwi in connection with his visit to Auckland.. The: meeting was attended by Tawhiao, Te Ngakan, Manuhin, Te Whanui, and mothers. A lengthy discussion ensued, in which Rowi’s action was strongly condemned. Ultimately, a deputation was appointed to wait on Rcwi at Kihikihi, and urge him to act in concert with the Kingitcs. The deputation had a prolongedinterview, and endeavored to bring pressure to bear on Rewi, but the latter was very firm, and declined to act with Tawhiao. He said he had taken the management of affairs in the interest of both races, and would not alter his policy. The deputation returned disappointed, ,
