Kakahu.—A meeting was held on the evening of July it, in the Kakahu schoolroom, for the purpose of considering matters connected with the finance of the Scotch Presbytery in the Geraldine district. Pre-. sent —The Rev Barclay (chairman), and Messrs Beat-tie, Eookc, B. Skinner, and M. Patrick. The Itev Air Barclay opened the meeting with prayer. He expressed regret that the secretary and treasurer of the Geraldine Committee should have failed to bo present at t he mooting, as they would have been able to lay before them various matters, the task of communicating which, he would have preferred, had not devolved upon himself. He proceeded to lay before them the resolutions passed at a meeting lately held at Geraldine relative to the reorganisation of the "financial department of tho Presbyterian Church in that district. He had already placed these resolutions before some of the outlying . districts. Those had agreed to abide by them. He had corno there this evening to ascertain their views on the subject. It was carried unanimously that the propositions of the Geraldine Committee be agreed to, and the standing animal subscriptions of tho Kakahu'district bo raised from £2l to £3O. Several nominations were forthwith made for the election of a subcommittee at Kakahu. Mr E. Skinner was elected chairman and treasurer, and the requisite . officers duly appointed. It was moved by tho Rev Mr Barclay that efforts be made to procure a harmonium for the use of all denominations in the church services at the school. sub-eoimuittoe was chosen for that purpose, Mr Rooke being elected chairman ami treasurer. It was resolved that a concert should —if possible —take place before the end of August in aid of tho fund, and that subscriptions bo solicited for the same end. A vote of thanks having been passed to the chairman, the meeting was closed with the benediction.

Obituary. —We regret having to record in this.issue the death of Mr Michael Barrat t, who has been an energetic settler in this district for the last seventeen years. The deceased arrived iii Timaru in the Sfcrathaßan and was for the best part of Ids time engaged in contracting and farming, but sonic twelve months back purchased the Caledonian hotel, in which place he was in business at the time of his death. Deceased had been suffering greatly from asthma for the last few years of Ids life, from which disease he expired on Monday afternoon Inst, after being confined to Ids bed for a few days. The funeral will leave the hotel at ,2 o’clock to-day.

■ Conks! Xu. —Balmoral and Leo went through to Christchurch by express yesterday for the Canterbury Cup, to be run for at Racecourse Hill on the 21th inst. Hock and Gyp are expected to leave Oamaru to-day,

School por South Rangitata. —This school and the master’s house are almost completed. Tho school is to be formally opened about the 10th August, by a concert.

Crown Christy Minstrels. These minstrels are now fully organised and in full practice, and expect to be ready early in August for tho entertainment promised by by them.

Tempka Races.— -A public meeting was held in the Crown Hotel last evening for the purpose of taking into consideration the holding of races in Tcnuika this year. Mr H. D. Macpherson was in the chair. A committee was appointed to carry out arrangements. Mr Geo. Bolton was elected secretary, and Mr Leonard Tombs treasurer. It was resolved that the annual races take place at Temuka in October, and the secret ary was instructed to call a committee meeting for Tuesday next., the 29th instant. The balancesheet. showed, a balance in the bank of £3O Ids lid.
