MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held in !he Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Friday last. Present— Hon J. B. A. Acland (chairman), Messrs Mackay, Heney, C. G. Tripp, and J. Wilson. - The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Tenders for the following works were received : Contract No. 20, cutting on Upper Rangitata road : Patrick Burke, £IOO (accepted). No. 21, forming Griffin’s road ; S. Rae and Sons, £3l (accepted). No. 22, cutting on cross road, Peel Forest : Jenkins and Lorgelly, £24 19s (accepted). No. 23, forming continuation of Cattle Valley, Raincliff. Andrew Reid, £1763 (accepted).
Tiie following correspondence was read ami considered ;—■
From Mr John Anderson, in reference to traction engine, Fioni Mr J. A. It. King, in reference to the plans of roads on It nncaif. From the editor of ihe ‘Evening Telegraph, - solieising a share of the Board s advertisements.
From th: Under-Secretary for Public Works, in reference to Mr Benidge’s claim for compensation connected with the purchase of -section 33,167, and stating that the claim cannot be entertained.
The Clerk was directed (o reply and stale that the land was sold to Mr Ferridgo on the 26th August, 1878, and that ho w r as leT in possession and fenced the laud and made other improvements, wnich drew’ the attention of fhe Board to the fact of the wrongful gule by the Government. No intimations was given to Mr Berridge until aft§r Gils improvements were made. The Bhard, although bound to protect the interests of the ratepayers in the matter of the road, think Mr Berridge entitled to compensation from the Government for tho loss sustained by their wTongful act. Tho Clerk w-as instructed to write to Messrs’Wakefield, Siudliohne, and Turnbull, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed by the Ashburton County Council asking them to support the Act which the Ashhurtoa County .mentioned as about to be brought forward for ihe purpose of making the Road Boards in the Geraldine County responsible for half the cost of the repairs totheßanitata traffic bridge, and state that Mr. Watkins, who has charge of the bridge, states that over 80,000 sheep have crossed the bridge since February last, coining principally from the Levels and Temuka Districts.
The Overseer was instructed to invite tenders for the following works ; 1. Ploughing 50 acres, Reserve 1859, Sherw’ood Downs. 21. Shingling the road near Peel Forest, 31. Fornvng the road through Worthington’s section, Rainclitf To take the broken part of the stone crusher to Mr. Anderson and have it properly strengthened. To inspect the creek near Mr. Tripps and have the damage done to the road repaired.
