Football. A football match will be played this afternoon between a team from the Timaru. school and the Tcmuka school, on the grounds of the latter. The following are the names of the Timaru players : M. Shepherd (captain), Ogilvie, Burnett, Scott, Barrell, Hamilton, Pearson, Cole, M'Kay, Lawrenson, Jones, Cramond, Wilson, lewin, and Shallard. Temuka : W. Austin (captain), C. H. Franks, T. Roberts, A. IT. Johnston, W. J. Wood, C. E. Rayner, J. Russell, E. C. Smith, J. Oliver, T. Simpson, T. Taylorl J. McCaskill, E. Chppman, M. TlMAJltf GOVERXMEXT Builoixgs.—The Government Buildings at Timaru were formally commenced yesterday. TiJiAßtr Steeplechase.—A protest has been entered against Ada, the winner of the Consolation at the Steeplechases on Wednesday, on the ground that her rider (Lyford) was disqualified iifc Dunedin for foul riding. The Stewards met last night to consider the protest.
Couksixg.—We underssand that the Canterbury Cup will be run for at Racecourse Hill, near Christohirrch, on the 24th instant. Temuka will be represented by Balmoral. Removal oe Prtsoxers. —The following batch of long-sentenced prisoners, convicted at the late sessions of the Sujireme Court at Timaru, were sent from Timaru to the Lyttelton Gaol by train yesterday : John Henry James, unnatural offence, four years ; Robert Lee, forgery, two years ; John Irving, alias M'Guire, stealing from the person, eight years ; David MTvee, stealiug from the person, three years ; James M'Gill, false pretences, four years ; Peter O'Donoghue, stealing from the person, eighteen months ; Thos. Moore, stealing from the person, eighteen inonfhs ; Walter John Simmons, robbery with violence, eighteen months ; also Michael Riley, unnatural offence, three years. The latter was convicted at the District Court.
Temuka Volunteers.—The usual weekly parade took place last night in the Volunteer Hall, about 20 rank ■end file being present. The company were put through some hard work in squad and company drill by SubLieut Smith, and then dismissed.
