TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting was held on the Ist July instant. The whole of the members were present. The minutes of the last monthly meeting were road and confirmed.

Mr G-ladstone waited upon the Board to enquire what had been- done in the matter of having the land transferred that the Board had purchased from him for road*purposes through his estate. On .the motion of Mr Barker it was resolved hhat Messrs Bruce and Wilkin3 be written to at once requesting them (as there appears to be some difficulty in having the conveyance made out at an early date under the Lund Transfer Act) to forward the papers to this office as soon as possible, for the purpose of putting it into the hands of a solicitor here, to'have the conveyance made under the old Act.

Mr James Scott attended to represent to the Board that he-had been rated for 327 acres more land than he held.

From Mr Scott's explanation the Board considered that as the valuation notice had been sent to the wrong person, the Clerk be instructed to withdraw the notice, and use all his endeavors to find out'the right party. Mr Scott also complained that the rush of water over the road near his place had scoured away the side of the creek. It was resolved that the surveyor do his best .to protect the same ; he was also granted a few pipes for the purpose of carrying surplus water across a road to prevent flooding his property. Mr A. Edgar attended to ask for a few drain pipes to be placed near his place to prevent flood water getting on to his property. Ordered to be done. The Board further instructed the surveyor to engage Mr Edgar, as he was living near the place, to put up some posts and rails, and to do all that was necessary to protect the dangerous places on the roads in his vicinity caused, by the floods.

Mr John Robertson interviewed the Board relative to the contract near Low's, complaining' that the surveyor would not pass his work, and asking to have his deposit returned to him.

After hearing the explanation of the surveyor, the Board decided to uphold his action in the matter. Mr S. Barker attended in reference to; a letter that was to come before the Board relative to a loss accruing from an excess of water having been thrown down through the canal, and asking the Board to take some steps to open the creek through their property, to relieve them of the extra amount of water that comes down the canal.

Resolved that the Board will agree to assist the applicant in clearing out the creek in the first instance, provided rhe parties interested agree to pay half the cost of the first cleaning, and in future keep the creek open themselves and hold the Board blameless from all responsibility. Mr S, Barker suggested the propriety of putting up a small embankment for the purpose of stopping in future any'flood water that might come in from the Temuka river . towards the creek leading to Milford, which has proved so disastrous in carrying away the bridge near Dunn's. The Surveyor was ordered to attend to the matter. Mr M. Moore waited on the Board with the information that the approach to the Raupo Creek bridge, on the Waitohi Flat, was impassable. The Surveyor was instructed to arrange with Mr Moore to have the work done. •

Mr J. Beatty represented to the Board that the *bridgo on Davy's road was impassable. The Surveyor was instructed to have the matter attended to.

Mr Barker drew attention to tho bridge near May's, on tho Milford road. The Surveyor was ordered to examine and remedy the matter. The following correspondence was read and considered :

From Mr F. Barker, drawing the attention of the Board to the danger of the "VVaihi river continually flooding the Ohapi Creek through the mill-race. Resolved that Messrs Murray Brothers be requested to take steps to prevent their race water doing damage to roads and private property. The Clerk was instructed to forward a copy of this letter, with the resolution, to Messrs Murray Brothers. From Mr Wheelband, complaining of the obstruction of the water-course between his house and Morley's having the effect of backing water into the. nursery. The Surveyor was instructed to examine the place and see into the matter. From J. B. Connor, contractor, asking to have hiß r.eposit returned. Resolved that when the work is performed ir. conformity with the contract, the deposit will bo returned in the usual manner.

From Mr J. B. Binley, complaining that an overflow of water from the main road swamped his premises. The Surveyor was ordered to investigate the matter complained of. From the Ashburton County Council, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed bv that body in reference to the Rangitata bridge. Resolved that all the correspondence on this matter be forwarded to Mr Wakefield, the member for the district, with a request that he will be good enough to watch over the interests of this district in the matter, with a recommendation that this Board strongly object to contribute towards the proposed expenditure. From John Mularky, complaining of damage done to his fences at Milford. Resolved that his letter be not entertamed.

Mr Barker- drew attention to a large amount of water flowing on to the Main South Road near, Hawke's. ■ The Surveyor" was ordered to investigate the matteK.with a view of finding a remedy for it in future. From the manager Bank of New Zealand, advising that a deposit receipt for £SOOO matures on the 11th inst. " Resolved that the sum of £3OOO be re-' deposited from this sum, and the balance be placed to credit of current account. * From the Mount Peel Road Board, re contribution towards repairs to Rangitata traffic bridge, intimating that 20,000 sheep from the Temuka district had passed over it since the repairs had been finished. From Mrs Capping, asking for a remission of her rates. Granted.

A long discussion ensued relative to tho matter of depositing the whole of the funds belonging to tiie Board in one bank, when it was proposed by MiBarker, seconded by Mr Quinn, and carried, "Tha<; in the event of another bank coming to Temuka, any mone3 r that the Board may have to deposit shall be equally divided among them." Resolved that specifications be prepared as soon as possible for replacing culverts,

bridges, Ac , carried away by the floods, and the Chairman lo call a special meeting of the Board to consider the same as soon as ready. Mr Barter drew the attention of the Board to the upper » oi’tion of (he Mill road, stating that it wanted forming and metalling. The Surveyor was ordered to prepare specifications for the same by next ordinary Board day. Mr Barker also drew attention to the drain on Penny’s road wanting clearing. Ordered that the. Surveyor take steps to have tenders called for by the projected special meeting of the Board'Mr Barker, in reporting on Rolleston’s and Box’s drain in conformity with a request of the Board at its last meeting, stated that the drain may be safely done provided that Badle’s drain is closed at its eastern end, and that the drain be cut only on the western side ; and fiddlier, that the ridge in the middle of the swamp be not cut through, and the road at that place he not formed. In considering the Surveyor’s report the following orders were made : Fresh tenders to be called for clearing drain and flax on Badham’s road, and shingling the same road. Tenders to bo called for shingling the Winchester and Beach roads. Shingling Milford Road to the Boiling . Down. Shingling the Geraldine road from Winchester to the boundary road. Shingling the main Milford road, and the Board i-to provide a man to take tally of the loads and spread the metal. Shingling boundary road from the Kakahu road to the river. Specifications to be prepared for building a bridge near Cox’s woolshed. Accounts amounting to £902 5s were passed for payment. The following tenders were accepted : No. 39, formation, Ohapi road ; Martin Dunn, at 17s 5d per chain. No. 40, formation, Spring road : Martin Dunn, at 29s lid per chain. No. 41, formation, Stewart’s road : T. Butler, Ll7O. No. 42, bridge at Sod Town : J. Radford, L 95. No. 43. Shinging, Kakahu road : 0. Flynn, L 47 17s 3d. No. 45, cross road, Ohapi Creek ; T. Leonard, at L2 3s lOd per chain. The Board %hen adjourned.
