In the House of Commons, last night, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reply to a question, said that a despatch had been sent to the Marquis of Normanby, which would arrive in Melbourne in a few days. He also promised to produce at an early date all papers in connection with the Victorian constitutional question. June 18, A revolution has broken out in the principal cities of Mexico. The country is in a state of anarchy. '"'"V! Don Oandido Barero, President of Paraguay, lias been deposed with a review to remodelling the constitution. Paris, June 19. The French Consul-General has informed the Khedive of Egypt that the French Government has decided to insist upon hia deposition, in consequence of recent events. Rome, June 19. An earthquake destroyed five villages in the vicinity of the town of Catalia, in Sicily. AUSTRALIAN NEWS, Sydney, June 18. The mint authorities have made arrangements to issue a new silver coinage. Brisbane, June 18. His Hon Sir James Cockle, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has resigned. June 19. The full despatch from Sir Michael Hicks-Beach to Lord Normanby has been .published here. The former dismisses the idea of conferring uncontrolled supremacy upon the Assembly, and condemns its tactics. lie has seen no proposal for Imperial legislative interference which he deems free from objection. He hardly anticipates that the Imperial Parliament will consent to disturb, at the instance of one Colonial House of Parliament, matters embodied in the Constitution Act, unless the Council refuse to concur in reasonable proposals for future relations in re fiscal matters, and persist in doing so after the constituencies have ratified the Assembly’s proposals. The schooner Louis Peacock, bound from Queensland to Sydney with timber, has been wrecked off Newcastle. The sailmaker was drowned, and the rest of the crew and the passengers were saved.
The vessel was owned in Sydney InMessrs Robey, and was built in New Jersey in 1855. Meluoukxe, June 18.
By the si lipping report per the Suez mail, dated London, May 9th, it appears that from the 20th April to 9th May the following vessels have sailed for new Zealand—Loch Cree and Beemah, for Wellington ; Cockcrmouth and Thomas Stephen, for Otago; Ironside and Kildonan, for Auckland ; Lurline and Merope, for Canterbury. The health of Lady Normanby is more satisfactory, though she is still weak. The Victorian Parliament will probably meet on July 14. Mr Berry’s apparent intention is to start the sess'on with the Estimates and a Reform Bill for rejection by the Legislative Council, to be followed by a re-appeal to the Home Government. Eight hundred of the Melbourne unemployed have already signed a petition to Mr Berry, asking for work. The Kelly sympathisers purchased from a Melbourne gimraaker 400 rounds of ammunition, su.table for a Spencer rifle, similar to the one the Kelly’s secured at the time of the Mansfield police murder. It is reported that they have succeeded in eluding the police. June 19. A despatch received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, says that Sir M. Hicks-Beach has not yet received any suggestion likeiy to secure the finality of legislation. He hopes there is no desire to confer complete political supremacy on the Assembly. He credits both Houses with reasonable desires, and expects both to assist in a solution of the difficulty. These points were omitted in the Ministerial summary of the despatch already published. Parliament meets for ? the despatch of business on Bth July. The Government have notified to the Associaton Banks that they intend to withdraw the Public Account in six months. No reason for this step is assigned. The Australian and European Bank reopens on Saturday. The Legislative Assembly, last night, passed a vote of L 300,000 for education, and rejected a resolution regarding the financial administration of the Ministry, and which was tantamount to a vote of want of confidence.
