THE RANGITATA BRIDGE.
The following correspondence \v«i3 read at the Ashburton County Council's last meeting : A letter was read from Mr Robert Irwin Clerk to the Mount Peel Eoad Board enclosing- the following resolution passed by the Board for the consideration of the Council —That in the event of the Ashburton County Council carrying out the extension of the Eangitata bridge, and the half of the cost not being recoverable from the Geraldine County Council, the Mount Peel Eoad Board will be prepared to contribute one-third of the moiety clue from the district south of the Eangitata, and further if the extension of the bridge bo carried out by iron cylinders on the same plan as the present bridge, the Board will be prepared to -p&y one-fourth of the entire cost, provided it does not exceed the sum of £SOOO. A communication was also received from Mr "Win. Wills, clerk to the Temuka Eoad Board, enclosing a resolution to the effect that the Board declines to assist in the' reconstruction of the Eangitata Bridge until some more definite scheme is laid down for the various Eoad Boards and County Councils. Cr Wright remarked that it wag time for the sake of the various local bodies concerned that this vexed question was settled, a;:d he thought, as they could arrive at no satisfactory understanding, the interference of the Government should be invited. He moved—That the correspondence with the Eoad Boards in the Geraldine County on the subject of the Eangitata Bridge be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, with a request that ho will take the necessary steps during the next session of the Assembly to legalise the deduction from the Geraldine County Council of a sufficient sum to pay one half the cost of the proposed extension of the Eangatata Bridge. Second by Mr Eeed and earned.
