TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday in the Road Board office. Pi escnt—Messrs Talbot (in the chair), Hayhurst, Quinn, Barker, and Ensor. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and continued. The following correspondence was laid on the table. From Mr M. Granger and others, asking to have the road on Rangitata Island formed. Ordered that the surveyor inspect the place and prepare specifications for the same in connection with his report. From Mr Meredith, offering timber at certain prices. Resolved that Mr Meredith’s offer be declined. From Mr Dunnett, giving the names of gentlemen the Winchester Cricket Club wish made trustees of their ground. Resolved, that in consideration of some information from Mr Barker that Mr Wakefield having promised to look into this reserve the Clerk forward the names of the gentlemen to Mr Wakefield, and ask him to kindly do the needful in the matter. From Mr Barker, in re alteration 1 or names on rate roll ; also payment for land taken for new roads Resolved that the Clerk alter tne rate book as suggested by next Board day, and the cost of hind for roads be paid on the transfer being signed. From Mr McCall urn, asking for certain repairs, &c,, to road, and approaches to bridge near Tommy’s Creek. Resolved that the Surveyor examine the same, and if cost bo small to have the work done, and otherwise to report on the matter. FrGm E. Lee, asking for sundry work to be done near his house. From Mr Christmas, asking to bo allowed to clean out a drain near his place, offering to do tl e work if allowed the material taken out for his own use. Agreed to. From the Ashburton County Council re Rangitata Ferry. Resolved that this Board cannot entertain Mr Findlay’s application for remuneration for past services, as his acting as ferryman appear to have been unauthorised. With respect to steps taken by the Council fox appointing a ferryman and schedule of charges the Board approved of the action taken. , The following tenders ware opened and accepted : No. B—Formation,8 —Formation, M'Callum’s road S. Mr Leonord, contractor, applied to the Board for some recompense for takingtimber out of the ditches included in his contract, and stated that the sum of LlO would bo a fair compensation. Resolved that the matter stand over for consideration till the contract is finished. Mr Low applied to be allowed some timber for the purpose of putting a bridge across the’ road ditch leading into his paddock, offering to put the bridge up himself if lie was allowed the timber. Granted. The Chairman stated that Mr A. Allan had complained that the fence of a certain gravel pit near his land was broken down, thereby causing inconvenience by alio wing his stock to stray into the road, and stated that probably Mr Allan would exchange that pit for another in a situation more advantageous to the Board. Resolved that the Chairman see Mr Allan, and learn what he (Mr Allan) would be prepared to do in the matter. Mr Barker reported th it the Orari Board of Conservators had struck a rate of Gd in the £. Resolved that a rate of Gd in the pound, struck by the Orari Board of Conservators, be collected as requested by that body. Proposed by Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Quinn, and carried, -‘ That Mr Chrito pher Bisset be elected as member or the Orari Board of Conservators in the room of Mr. D. Inwood, who has left the district.” - Mr Barker requested the Surveyor to examine Penney’s road, as a certain creek, in his opinion, required attention. Agreed to. Mr Hayhurst brought before the notice of the Board the dilapidated state of the footbridge on MTumzie’s Road. Proposed by Mr Hayhurst, seconded by Mr Barker, “ That the cart bridge be erected instead of the footbridge, and that specifications be prepared accordingly. With reference to the reports of the Health Officer and the Inspector of Nuisances it was resolved that Messrs Ackroyd and Whitehead be notified that their yards must be kept cleaner than at present, and Mr Boyd Thomson be informed that the Board object to the creek being polluted at his yards, also that the attention of the police be drawn to the condition of both the above slaughter yards. The Inspector was authorised to the use of closet pans throughout thef town. /Jf- 1
