The Temuka Leader. WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1879.

Temuka School Committee Meeting. —A meeting of the Tcmuka School Committee Avas held last night. Present—Messrs Wilson (chairman), Wills, Russell, Rrown, and Gray. The minutes of the previous meeting Avere read and confirmed. A disous•Cussion took place as to the advisability of giving holidays in order to haA r e the school painted, and the master drew attention to the matter. Messrs Gray and Wills were appointed to confer with the schoolmaster on the subject. Mr Wills proposed, Mr Gray seconded, and it Avas carried, “ That a number of forms of schedule 3 of the Education Compulsion Act he signed by the Chairman and given to the head master, to forward to parents of children not attending the school.” From the Education Board, re penny savings banks. Consideration deferred. Erom the same, rc an interview with Mr Hammond. The action taken by the Chairman at an intervieAV was confirmed on a motion by Mr AV ills. Erom the Board, re increase of salary to teachers. Proposed by Mr Wilson, and seconded by Mr RussolJ, and carried, “ That the Chairman ascertain the time from which Miss Brown had been acting as pupil teacher.” The Chairman then stated that Mr Hammond had given him to understand that a second master Avould be appointed on the Ist of June next. Resolved that the Chairman ask the Education Board to at once advertise for a second master. Mr Wills and Mr Grey Avere appointed visitors to the school for the ensuing month. The, meeting then adjourned. Coursing Club. Nominations for the All-aged Slakes Avill be recoined by the secretary (Mr Bolton) until 6 p.m. on Friday next. Sudden Death. —We regret to hoar that Mr Ostler, of MTCcnzio Country (late one of the Geraldine County Councillors), died suddenly yesterday morning. Mr Ostler, we are informed, went to bed in his usual health, but he died before morning. The cause of death is said to he heart disease. Accidents. —Mr Campbell, of Waitohi, mot with a very serious accident yesterday. Ho was riding home, when his horse took fright at a calf A\diich started up on the road. He Avas throAvn violently to the ground, breaking his collar-bone and receiving other injuries. He Avas immediately brought to Tcmuka, and attended by Dr Hayes. An accident occurred yesterday to a little child named Woodley. It was being AA’heelcd along the road in a perambulator when a horse and dray came in contact with the vehicle, upsetting the little one. The fall broke the child’s collar-bone, and Avas attended to by Dr Hayes. No. 1 Teaiuka Volunteers.—An adA-er-tisement in another column requests the attendance of all members of the above company at parade on the dates mentioned. Quadrille Assembly-.—A meeting; of those interested in forming a class for the winter months will take place next Monday evening at the Caledonian Hotel. A good attendance is expected.

Pugilistic. — We do riot often have to chronicle encounters under the above heading in our quiet little township, but Monday last was quite an exceptionally busy day among the believers in the noble art of self-defence. From wbat wc can learn two men named Hussey and MtGrath had a slight difference of opinion over the prevailing crisis with the banks and the ultimate success of Sir George Grey’s mission to Tc Kopua, when neither agreeing, they resorted to the rules of the P.R., and “ bad it out.” Several rounds were fought, both combatants suffering a little from the effects of lost “ claret” and scratches. Neither won, and the police were not on the ground. ‘ North Canterbury News.’ —The proprietor of this paper, published at Kaiapoi, announces that the paper will not bo published after this week. South Canterbury Coursing Club. — A committee meeting of this club was held at the Royal Hotel, Temuka, on Saturday evening last. Present—Messrs Thomson (chairman), Paterson, Chartcris, Meßratnoy, "Wilson, Hr Hayes, and Bolton (bon. secretary). The Club having obtained the permission of Messrs Smith and Henniston to course upon their estate at Peel Forest,- provided the Government granted the recommendation of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society giving leave to those gentlemen to course upon their estate, it was resolved, “ That the secretary should telegraph to Mr Farr, secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, to ask if the Government lias granted the requisite permission.” Hr P. Mclntyre and Mr W. Heßenzy wore unanimously elected members of the Club, and Mr Leonard Tombs was proposed as a member. After considerable discussion it was resolved, “ That nominations for the South Canterbury All-aged Stake should bo received until Friday, May IG.” Hr Hayes and Mr Paterson were appointed a deputation to have an interview with Mr Perry, lion, secretary South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, re refund of amount paid by the Coursing Club for hawks. Other important business having been attended to, Mr W. G. Walker, bon. secretary Canterbury Coursing' Club, who was presented as a visitor, gave the committee some valuable information on coursing matters. The meeting thcn.’terininatcd with a vote of thanks to the chairman. Mechanics’ Institute. A committee meeting of the above was held in the reading-room of the Institute on Friday, 9th instant. The librarian’s report was read and considered. It was proposed by the Rev Mr Clinton, seconded by Mr Mendelson, and carried, “That the librarian be authorised to collect £3 Is 2d from Messrs Ackroyd and Whitehead, payment for waste paper sold to them.” A cheque was received from Mr Cooper, in payment of the old 1 Fields’ and ‘ Australasians.’ An account from Messrs Steel and Jones, agents for Home papers, for £ls 11s lOd was passed for payment. Resolved, “ That Mr Fildes, Hr Hayes, and the Rev F. Clinton form a sub-committee to see after the binding of whatever books require it.” Mr Clinton proposed, Mr "Wareing seconded, and it was carried, “ That ‘ Cassell’s Family Magazine ’ he obtained for the institute if its cost does not exceed that of the ‘ Family Herald.’ ” Resolved, “That the South Canterbury Board of Education bo written to about the £52 8s 9d allotted to the Temuka Mechanics’ Institute, and which they have not yet received.” A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. St. Saviour’s Church, Temuka. —The usual monthly meeting of the Yestry was held in St. Saviour’s Church .on the l“th instant. Present —Rev G. F. Clinton (in the chair), Messrs Fildes, Hooper, Mackintosh, and Tavernier. The principal business was to elect parochial nominators, when the following gentlemen wore appointed—Messrs W. B. Howell, S. H. Barker, C. J. Eayner, and J. A. Young. Some accounts were passed for payment, after which the meeting closed. Another Y xctim. —A man named William Little was found in a dying state in a shed at Albany on Monday, and before medical aid could he summoned he expired. At the inquest the evidence showed that death was caused by congestion of the lungs and brain, brought on by drink and exposure. Sporting. —A trotting match has been arrangtd for £2OO aside, money down, between Mr Frank W. Evans’ grey mare Millie, from Rangitikei, and Mr Kirkwood’s celebrated Black Boy ; distance, 15 miles, on the Eiccarton road ; to ho run on the 1/fch. The long expected steeplechaser Lone Hand loft Port Philip by the Tararua on Saturday last.
