PUBLIC HEALTH IN TEMUKA.
(to the editor. of the temuka leader.) [Tvphoid fever lias often been termed sewage fever, because it; is so frequently produced by emanations from untrapped or leaking house drains. ... If 3'ou use pump water, you should be careful that it is not contaminated with sewage matters which have escaped from your own or your neighbors’ houses.] “ Cameron’s Lectures on Health.” Sip., —-Allow me to call your attention to a matter of some importance as affecting the health of this town. In November, 1878, the Board of Health passed a resolution to the effect that the present system of pit closets must be done away with, and pans substituted in their stead. This order was complied with b} r about thirty residents in the town ; the remainder, taking no notice allowed the old stale of things to continue. I have been a' some trouble to obtain the names of those householders who have not complied with the notice served upon them by the Inspector of Nuisances last November, when the resolution was passed by the Board ; and I am sorry to have to inform you that the name of our Health Onicer (Dr Hayner) appears on the list—indeed the premises which ho lias just vacated arc in a most filthy condition. 1 do not now intend to mention the names of the other defaulters, but if the nuisances ate'not abated within a fortnight I shall call upon you, sir, to publish their names in the interests of those who have at heart the health of the town. The readers of your paper will no doubt recollect an advertisement breathing out threatenings against those who did not comply with (he clauses of the Public Health Act, and signed T. O. Hayner, M.D. Comment is needless. —\ 7 ours, Ac., Example is Bettep. than Precept.
