ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH, TEMUKA.

The annual general meeting of the parishioners of -this church was held on the 22nd ult. The Rev G. Fynes Clinton presided, and opened the meeting with prayer. The churchwardens, in presenting their annual report, have to congratulate the parish upon the material progress that has been made during the past year. A parsonage house has been built, and on the Ist September the Rev G. F. Clinton came among us as resident clergyman. During the last session of the Diocesan Synod the parochial district was fully constituted a parish, since which the curate in charge, who was then in.deacon’s orders, has been ordained a priest ; and having been nominated to the Bishop by the board of nominators, was duly instituted as incumbent of the parish on the evening of Ladyday, The Sundayschool has unfortunately lost the services of Mr Rutland, and has been taken in hand by Mr Clinch as superintendent. Some other teachers have volunteered their services, and the school is in an efficient state. The offertories are £136 5s 3d ; seat rents, £36 10s ; which, with a balance of last year of £3O 11s 3d, and a refund from the parsonage building fund of £24, make a total of £227 6s 6d, against an expenditure of £241 9s Bd, which leaves a deficit of £l4 3s 2d. Mr Fildes then read the report of the parsonage building committee:— The committee beg to report that out of the tenders sent in for the building that of Mr W. G. Rutland, at £750, was accepted. This amount is somewhat in excess of the anticipated cost, but the

conditions of the grant and loan from the church property trustees were such that the extra expenditure was unavoidable, as without compliance with the very stringent conditions imposed by that body no assistance would have been rendered to us. A grant of £250 was made to us by the trustees, and a loan of the same amount was also arranged with them. This latter is repayable by monthly instalments in the shape of payments on society shares to the value of £250 taken out by the committee in the name of the church property trustees, to whom Messrs John Meyer, F. Tavender, and Dr Gumming have kindly given the necessary bond for repayment of the loan, the liquidation of which, by the monthly and annual payments, will extend over six years. This total of £SOO has been supplemented by private subscription to an extent of £146, and to this may be added a sum of £95 odd, proceeds of the gift auction lately held. This makes a total in round numbers of £741, or but £9 short of the original contract, which latter will, however, be exceeded by extras, architect’s fees, etc. The contractor has to this date received a total of £O2O, leaving £l3O still due on the original contract. To this may probably be added £65 for further extras and sundry expenses, making a total of about £195 yet to pay, towards which there is £SO to receive from the church property trustees as balance of the grant, and a balance of the building, a debt of something like £l2O, for which due provision will have to be made. In addition to the erection of the parsonage, this outlay has provided a stable at a cost of £24. The meeting then proceeded to elect church officers and vestry. The Rev G. F. Clinton, after thanking Mr Wood for acting during the past year as minister’s churchwarden, again nominated him in that capacity. Messrs S. D. Barker and F. Tavender were nominated as parishioners’ churchwarden. After a show of hands, Mr Tavender was declared elected. Vestry—Messrs Fildes, Wills, Meyer, Talbot, Radford, S. D. Barker, M'lntosh, Hooper, Lee, and Dr Gumming. The Rev G. F. Clinton expressed thanks for assistance rendered him by Messrs Wood and Fildes as layreaders. Votes of thanks were recorded to Mr A. LeG. Campbell for the efficient way he discharged his duties as churchwarden ; also to Miss Campbell for her kind assistance as organist, and to those ladies and gentlemen who assisted at the Sundayschool. The usual vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
