AN AWKWARD MISTAKE.
A rich story reaches the ‘ Maryborough Standard’ from Avoca. A gentleman connected with mining ventures, of considerable influence, well respected, and possessing the confidence of all with whom be lias any business or other relations, visited Maryborough with a view to inspect the mining industry of tire neighbourhood. Carrying out his intention, he went to the Working Miners’ claim, Homebush. While there he was pounced upon by a mounted sonstable of police from Avoca, who declared that- gentleman was none other than the redoubtable outlaw, Ned Kelly. Remonstrances were in vain, tire policeman, whose only excuse could be that be had imbibed too freely of intoxicating draught, would have it that he had arrested Kelly, and he borrowed a cart, wherewith to convey- his prisoner to the lockup. On the road the cart came to grief, and the shafts were broken. Ultimately, Avoca was reached. It had been pointed out to the constable that Kelly was a young man, whereas Iris prisoner was an elderly gentleman, so the constable, after cogitation, arrived at the conclusion that Ire had arrested Wiberg, the gold robber. Such was the information lie volunteered to his superior officer, who poo-poobed the statement. The constable persisted, and Sergt. Shanklm still doubting, it is averred his junior officer struck him, whereupon the sergeant collared the constable, and forthwith lodged him in the lock-up. The Sandhurst gentleman was set at liberty and returned home. Although he had reason for complaint, he recounted his adventure to our informant in a jocular manner, looking at the matter in its ludicrous light. He desires to know, however, who will recoup him for the loss Cjtfte occasioned by the freak of the policeman from the sweet vale, and intends to make inquiries on that score.
