GRAIN AND FLOUR MARKETS. Christchurch, Saturday. The absence of advices of any further decline in the London wheat market has had the effect of inspiring more confidence in the local markets. Buyers are acting with more freedom, and a considerable number of transactions have been carried through. We have heard of several part cargoes of wheat changing hands at prices withheld ; the buyers are, we understand, not regular traders in grain, and it is a healthy sign when outsiders (if we may use the term) see their way to operate. The advices by the inwards Brindisi mail from England hold out little hope of any material permanent improvement there, owing to the high figures tvhich the “visible supply” from America still keeps at, being on the Bth February no less than 20,400,000 bushels. Our own export business during the month just closed compares most favorably with the like month of last year. The figures are:— March, 1878—150,000 bshls. wheat. March, 1879—225,000 bshls. wheat. In values we have little change to note. Fair average samples sell freely at 3s Id to 3s 3d, whilst prime milling and clean seed parcels command 3s 3M to 3s sd. There is an impi’oved business being done in flour, which is what might be expected at the beginning of the month. Prices have not undergone any change, export orders being taken freely at £8 to £8 os. Oats are exceedingly dull, and sales difficult to effect. The Melbourne market has utterly given way. No doubt a slight cessation of shipments will soon have an improving effect on that market. Farmers arc now storing for a time, and doubtless their action will be rewarded in a few months. Feed samples are only worth 2s 6d to 2s 7d, and milling 2s 8d to 2s 9d. There is little change to be noted in barley. Sales continue to be made at 5s to 5s Gd, according to sample. Sellex-s arc not anxious to force sales, and on the other hand buyers having got their bulk of their requirements are holding off. Grass seed continues without any improvement, and sales can only be made at reduced rates. Buyers are only offering 4s to 4s 6d, do not at present care to accept. Potatoes are not quite fit for shipment yet, but still a small business has been done in them for delivery as soon as ready. We have heard of sales at L2 to L2 ss. The ‘ Warrnambool Standard ’ of the 20th ult. reports “ The market for potatoes was firmer yesterday at L2 5s per ton. At this figure purchasers were getting all they at present require.” No change is recorded in butter during the week. Sales continue to be made at 9d to lOd f.o.b. In cheese there has been rather more business done, as sellers have shown more disposition to meet buyers’ views. Sales are reported at 6d for prime qualify. Carers report stocks of bams and bacon as being very
light. A good demand has been experienced at 8d for hams and bacon ; 7id for bacon ; and 9id for hams. The agricultural statistics for the Canterbury provincial district have been published,- as compared with those of 1878. The following is the result ; Wheat.
Taking these returns, it appears the total productions in 1879 in wheat, oats, and barley ars in excess of those of list year. This year the yield per acre for — Wheat is stated at—2o - 8 bushels Oats is stated at 25 - 2 bushels Bai’ley is stated at 21 - 7 bushels
