JANETTE'S HAIR.

(From the Oil City Derrick.) “ Oh, loosen the snood that you Treat, Janette” “ What’s that you say?” exclaimed her eyes flashing with indignation “ loosen my snood ! You have more impudence than any man I ever heard tell off. Til loosen my snood when I please sir, and most certainly not at your dictation,” and the young lady could with difficulty suppress her wrath. But the young man was head over heels in love, and continued his insane .jabber: Let mo tangle a hand in your hair, my pet for the world to me”: “ I’ll tangle a hand in your hair to your everlasting sorrow, you impertinent scamp,” and she rose haughtily, strode to the other side of the room, and looked out of the window. “ It is brown with a golden gloss,” ■continued the lover, who evidently had his little speech all prepared for the occasion ; “ it is finer than the silk of the floss, my pet” “ You have no right, sir, to call me, your pet,” exclaimed Janette, not deigning to turn round, while she beat a tattoo on the velvet carpet with her dainty boot. The lover could not be shut off, and so continued: “ ’Tis a beautiful mist falling down to your waist ; ’tis a thing to be braided nnd jewelled, and kissed”' “ Just you dare kiss, and you’ll! get your cars slapped.” “ My arm was the arm of a clown, Janette” “No need-to tell me that, sir,” said Janette, sharply “ But warmly and softly it loved to caress” “ It never caressed me, and if you ■say it did, you say what ain’t true, and .you know it.” “ Your eyes have a swimming glory, revealing the dear old story, my pet they were gray” “ They ain’t gray, no such thing, you mean, hateful fellow, they’re blue —beo--hoo-hoo !” and Janette took a threedollar handkerchief from her pocket and wiped her weeping eyes. “ Well, well, my adorable one,” put ■in the persistent lover, “ don’t cry ; I was mistaken, and humbly ask your pardon ; but you ought not to blame me, because you will never let me come near enough to you to see what colour yqgr blessed eves really are. I suspect =nff*hat they are blue with that ■chastened tinge of the sky when the trout leaps quickest to snap the fly, and they match with your golden hair, Janette.” “ I’ll forgive you this time,” said the young lady, “ but don’t you ever say my eyes are gray again.” This gave the young man courage. It is wonderful how little it requires to encourage a lover. “ Your lips,” he began, as he stole ‘cautiously to the j’oung lady’s side ; your lips—but I have no words Janette ; they arc sweet as the twitter of birds—O, a thousand times sweet !” “ Sir ! ” “ Of course, my dear lady, I do not mean to insinuate that I speak from personal experience—(would to heaven 'that I did !)—but I can’t help but think your lips are verv sweet” “ Sir ! ” “O, yes, they are sweet as the twitter of love-birds when the Spring is young, and the roses are wet with the dew-drops in each red blossom set, and they suit your golden curls my pet.” “ You don’t mean it, I’m sure ; I •know you are only trifling with me,” •said Janette, blushing slightly. “ I do mean it ! ” exclaimed the infatuated youth ; “ heaven know T s I mean it ! ” and he took her jeweled hand in his own. “ Oh, you have tangled my life in your hair, Janette ; ’tis a silken and golden snare, my darling, but so gentle is the bondage that my soul im;p]ores the right to continue your slave evermore —shall I, shall I ?” Janette’s head dropped over on his shoulder, and she whispered just loud •enough for him to hear. “ You shall, you shall V”
