GOVERNMENT LAND SALE.

The sale of sections in the Arowhenua township, which took place yesterday in the Crown Hotel, was a great success, over fifty sections (all that were advertised) were disposed of. Mr Marshman, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who acted as auctioneer, and managed the sale with great tact and ability, could not bub be greatly surprised at the keenness of the biddings and the eagerness displayed by the competitors.. The Government upset price was Ll2 for every quarter acre, and in every case except one they were knocked down at over upset price, the lowest being two at Ll 3 4s each, and a few in bad ground and indifferent localities sold at Ll 4 10s, next one Ll 7 10s, all the others ranging from about L2O to L4d ss. Sections 467 to 474, a block eagerly sought after by the managers of the Catholic Church, were bought by that body one after another at prices ranging from L 25 to LGG per section, amounting altogether to L33410s for the two acres. In the other lots the highest prices were given for corner sections. The following is a list of the prices, the number of the sections, and the names of buyers : —-Section 58, Job Brown, Ll 4 10s; 59, Job Brown, Ll2 ; 60, W. Sherratt, Ll 4 10s ; 105, Charles Ramble, Ll2 ; 107, Thomas Hawke, Ll 3 10s. This being the whole of the sections advertised Mr Marshman thanked the company for their spirited bidding, stating that he was agreeably surprised at the result, and hoped soon to be able to come before them again with another lot. As we have stated, the result is highly satisfactory, and shows the advantage of having the sale in the locality where the sections are. We will not need to again ask the Government to adopt this plan. One feature in the sale is the fact that few were bought on speculation, the greater number intending to build and settle upon the land. This movement has been stimulated by the difficulty of obtaining houses upon any terms. Another encouraging feature is that it shows the confidence the investors have in the Temnka township and district. In the immediate prospect of harbor works, too, being very soon started at Milford it is a proof that the Tcmuka settlers are not afraid of that undertaking ruining this town, as some croakers hold out. Taking it altogether it is a pleasing proof that in Temnka there is yet some life and energy, as well as some money in our midst. We hope it will stimulate the fortunate owners of property to commence building at once, as the building trade is getting a little dull at present. Already some are marking out sections for themselves for the next auction. It should be stated that these sections sold today were not in or near the business part of the town, and that shows the price the better.
