SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. Stewards : D. Maclean, J. A. Gamack, M. Jonas, J. W. White, E. Elworthy, G. Cliff, T. Hall. Judge ; M. Stud holme. SECOND DAY—WEDNESDAY. The stewards were again favored with fine weather to-day, but it was too dusty to he pleasant, and the coarse, which had been cut up by the previous day’s running, was rather heavy going, particularly in the hurdle race, where the take off in most cases was on ploughed land. Ihe attendance was excellent, and the sport a great improvement on ■ that of the first day. Business commenced with the Timaru Cup, for which, Caraballo being an absentee, only three went to the post. Of these Mata was made a strong favorite, starting with 2 to 1 on him. The Dunedin Cup winner ran a great horse, though at one time it seemed as if Clifford were waiting almost too long for Chancellor, who run much better than on the previous day, and cut out the work at such a merry pace that the layers of the odds must have felt uncomfortable. As it was, the son’of Dead Shot won cleverly at the finish from Chancellor, who was virtually beaten at the rails. Templeton made his effort half a mile from home, but the old horse, who seemed a bit stiff in his preliminary, never seemed able to get up with his opponents. Eversley was served up very warm for the Hurdle race, for which he started at even money with a very good field against him. He won easily enough at tnelinish, his most formidable opponent being the Agent, who, giving him two atone, finished
a fair second. The Moose, with whom Mr Noilson declared to win, was third, but liis refusal at the second jump lost him whatever chance he might have had. Pakeha, who also rc-tOSed, was next. Loyalty fell, and Te Whetu was not persevered with. The following are the events : Tijiaru Cur a handicap of 200 sovs., with a sweepstake of 5 sovs. for acceptors, amount accruing from the sweepstake to go to the second horse; nominations, 2 sovs ; acceptances, 4 sovs ; distance, 2j miles. After they had gone a quarter of a mile the old horse went up to Mata. Passing the stand Chancellor led the trio by six lengths, but at the next turn the favorite had improved his position. They ran tlins to the hack of the course. Before the last turn Templeton made an effort to go up, but died away almost immediately, while Mala, getting on terms with Chancellor coming into the"straight, the two ran a good race homey together. The favorite, however, stayed the longer, and won at the finish by a short neck. Time, 4 min. lolsec. f Handicap Hurdle Rage, of 80 sovs., distance, about 24 miles, over eight flights of hurdles; nominations, 1 sov ; acceptances, 2 sovs ; second horse to receive LlO out of the stake. Moose now took a strong lead, with Eversley lying next, Loyalty a length behind, and Agent and Te Whetu whipping in. At the second hurdle a refusal of the Moose let Eversley up to the front, but the black got over the second time of asking, just in front of Loyalty, and they passed the stand in this order, the two chesnuts still a long way in the rear. At the back of the course Loyalty fell, throwing his lider, and from this out the race seemed to lie between Eversley and the Moose. The former, however, came right away at the turn into the straight, and won in a canter by six lengths from the Agent, who came very fast from the rails, beating the Moose by a length for second money. Tradesmen’s Handicap, of 50 sovs ; If miles ; nominations, 1 sov. ; acceptances, 2 sovs.; weights to be declared after Timarn Cup ; acceptance after the Hurdle Race.
