MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday, 26th February. Present—The Hon J. Barton A. Acland (chairman), Messrs J. Wilson, C. Gr. Tripp, and J. Henry. The minutes of the previous meeting was read and considered. Tenders for the following works were opened and considered : No. 1 Contract : T. S. Lewis, LB4 ; Timothy Herlehy, L 45 ; James Riordan, L4l; Thomas Blair, L3O 7s 6d; George Jenkins, L 26 15s (accepted). No. 2 Contract: Michael O'Brien, L 162 12s ; T. S. Lewis, Ll5B ; T. Blair, L 136 15a; James Riorden, Ll2 4 7s 6d ; John Sugrue, LllO (accepted). No. 3 Contract: Edward Counihan, L 192 16s ; Richard O'Neil, Ll6O lis ; John Sugrue, LIOO j Michael O'Brien, LIOO (accepted). No. 4 Contract: Patrick Burke, L 47 0; Edward Counihan, L 469 ; Timothy Herlihy, L 430; John Sugrue, L3Bl 12s; Michael O'Brien, L 38 0; Joseph Wharton, L 323 16s (accepted). The following correspondence was read and considered : From the Colonial Secretary's Office, re extension of time under the Rating Act, 1876. From the Mount Cook Road Board, requesting thej Board to contribute half the cost of improving the Clayton road from the Burke's Pass road to the Opuha river, and furnishing an estimate of the cost of the work required. The Clerk was instructed to reply, and state that the Mount Peel Board having already contributed the sum of L 322 19s 3d towards the road in question, are of opinion that they cannot be expected to contribute any further. From the Union Bank of Australia, advising the receipt of L2IBO 10s 4d from the Pay master- General. From the Secretary to the Treasury, informing the Board that the sum of L2IBO 10s 4d has been remitted to its credit, being 20 per cent, of the Land Fund for the quarter ending 31st December, 1878. From Mr J. H. R, K : ng, in reference to surveying a line of road through section 19994, and stating that he would be able to do the work in a month's ti ne. The Clerk was directed to reply, and inform Mr King that the Board will wait for the time mentioned in his letter. From Mr T. Clayton, making application to be allowed to erect a house on gravel reserve ISO 3, near Peel Forest. Besolvcd that the Board must decline to accede to Mr Clayton's request. From Mr J. 'Morris, stating that in his former estimate of the area of the Mount Peel Riding of the Ceraldine County that part of the old Mount Peel Road District north of Forest Cvoek was included, which contains 174,600 acres, making the area of tho present district 401,700.

From Mr J. Anderson, informing the Board that the stone-breaking machine had arrived, and would be ready for aelivcry in a few days. From the Chief Surveyor, furnishing particulars with reference to section 27,450 and enclosing a tracing of the same. Resolved that the overseer arrange with Mr Button for him to take his traction engine down to the Rangitata railway station and test the stone-breaking machine, and bring it up to the office; also to make the necessary arrangements at the station for unloading the machine upon its arrival. The Hon J. B. Acland made application to be allowed to remove a tree from, off the road in Peel Forest. Resolved that permission be given Mr Acland to remove all timber from the road adjoining his land. The overseer's report was read and considered. Tenders were ordered to be invited for the following works : —l. Additions to stable at the Road Board Office. 2. Forming the road from Peel Forest road to Tripp's Cutting. 3. Cutting and culverts on the road from Raincliff Station to section 20,226. 4. Protective works near Raincliff. 5. Cutting near Opuha river. 6. Forming the road from Monnt Michael Yalley to Gray's farm. The overseer was instructed to get two sets of harness from Christchurch, also to report upon the road in Peel Forest. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr G-. Tilslne, informing him him that his cattle are doing damage to the sides of the cutting in Peel Forest by treading them down, and to request him to remove them or prevent them damaging the road. The Clerk was directed to write to the G-eraldine Road Board, calling their attention to the state of the embankment on the south side of the Rangitata bridge, and request the co-operation of the Board in widening and fencing the sides with a strong fence. The Clerk was instructed to write to all contractors having contracts under the Board giving notice that unless their contracts are begun and progress made to the satisfaction of the Board by its next meeting, the works will be taken out of their hands and re-let at their sole risk and expense, in accordance with the general conditions of contract. Proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Henry, and carried, " That this Board desires to state that they recognise the benefits derived by this distrist from the spirited and successful efforts of Mr James Watkins, of j the Rangitata Hotel, in erecting a temporary ' bridge connecting the traffic bridge with the north shore of the Rangitata river, thereby doing away with the loss and inconvenience arising from the stoppage of ordinary traffic aud crossing of stock over that river." Accounts to the amount of L 447 10s 2d were passed sor payment. The Board then adjourned till the third Friday in March.
