Wednesday, Deb. 19. [Before A. LeG. Campbell, Esq., R.M.] POLICE CASES. James Baruett, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was fined £2. Jack M'Guire was brought up, charged with stealing - from the person. Sergeant Carlyon conducted the case, and called Colin Archibald MTntyre, who deposed ; On Monday last I was in Temuka, and changed a £lO cheque at the .Bank, receiving a£s note and live £1 notes. Of that sum I paid £1 for rates, and changed £1 for drinks. I was in company with accused, but could not say at what hotel, as I w;is drunk. I remember scuffling with the accused, because he was trying to put his hand into my trousers’ pocket. Cross-examined by accused : I. cannot remember where I saw you. I cannot say how much money you took from me, but you are in a better position to know as to that than I am. Michael Quinn deposed : lam a publican at Temuka. On Monday night last M‘lntyro and accused were at the bar in my house. They had two glasses of gin together, and appeared to be very friendly with each other. I saw accused, when standing on tire right-band side of McIntyre, put his left hand down by McIntyre’s side, and on taking it up immediately put it into his own left-hand trousers’ pocket. I then sent for the police, the accused and MTntyre remaining in the bar. I saw accused arrested and searched at the station, when 18 or 19 shillings irr silver and three £1 notes were found in his possession. Sergeant Carlyon proved arresting and searching prisoner. Accused having been cautioned in the usual maimer, stated that he had changed a L 5 note in Timaru, from which place lie arrived at Temuka, in company with another man, for the purpose of looking for a horse. He unfortunately got a few glasses too much, and the next morning found himself in the lock-up. but could not say why he bad been brought there. He was then committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court to be held in Timaru. William Essery was charged by Joseph Woolrych with assault. Mr ITamersley appeared for the defendant. His Worship stated that the evidence showed that great provocation had been given by the prosecutor, and he would therefore only inflict a tine of 10s. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given by defeult iu the following cases ; —Wilson and Sons v. G. Dorch, LI 10s 9d ; F. Franks v. William Haylmrst, LI 5s ; same v. J. Carter, L 3 2s (id. F. Franks v. A. Pearson, —Claim Ll 9 2s, for goods supplied. The defendant stated that he became a bankrupt last October. The plaintiff said he did not know anything about tiro plaintiff’ having filed his schedule, and asked that judgment should be recorder.. His Worship said he would give judgment for the plaintiff' but stated that no subsequent steps could be taken in that Court. G. H. Thompson v. William Massey.— Claim L2. A deal of evidence having been taken, judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs. George Murray v. H. Hullen. —Claim L 9 5s Id, wages. Mr Johnston appeared for the defendant. Judgment was given for tlio full amount and costs, paid into Court. J. Woolrych v. Win. Essery. —Claim L 5 14s 4d, for wages. Mr Hamersley appeared for the defendant. The plaintiff made a most contradictory statement, and the defendant and two witnesses called by Mr Hamersley having given evidence, Judgment was given for L2 IG, without costs, which sum had been admitted to be due at the opening of the case.
