Wednesday, Feb. 5. [Before A. LeG. Campbell, Esq., R.M.] POLICE CASES. Several persons were summoned fur allowing cattle cattle to wander on (he railway reserve. One case was dismissed and fines inflicted in other cases, of 5a for first and 10s for second offences. D. McCallum, of Epworth, was charged •with a breach of the Slaughterhouse Act, by killing 24 pigs, for purpose of sale, on unlicensed premises. Defendant pleaded guilty, but urged in extenuation that he and his father bad carried on the same business for sixteen years, and bad never heard that a license was necessary for killing pigs. The Bench stated that a fine would not be inflicted in this case, but defendant must take out a license. The case was adjourned for the present. CIVIL CASES. Wilson and Sous v. G. Pender —Claim L2 I7s fld. Judgment by default.

G. H. Thompson v. W. Massey—Cl'.dm L2, for balance of accounts for horse hire since 1874. Defendant pleaded not indebted. Case adjourned for a fortnight. C. Story v. R. Orton—Claim L2O 19s Gd, on a judgment summons. Mr Johnston appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Hamersley for defendant. Mr Hamersley contended first that the case could not be heard, inasmuch as the summons on which the judgment was obtained had not been properly served. The service was, however, proved by two witnesses, and then defendant’s counsel urged that the defendant’s having filed a deed of arrangement with certain of his creditors barred any such action as was now contemplated being taken. Mr Johnston argued against this for a considerable time, but unsuccessfully, and the case was dismissed. J. G. Mason v. L. Healey —Claim L 7 19s 3d, on a judgment summons. Defendant, who did not appear, was ordered to pay one half on the 20th instant and the balance on the 20th March, or in default of either payment to be imprisoned for one month.
