GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, the 4th February, 1879, in the office, Geraldine., Members pre- • sent—Messrs James Hay, Wnn Upton Slack, William De Renzy, and Frederick FJatman. On the motion of Mr De Renzy, seconded by Mr Hay, Mr Wm. Upton Slack was voted to take the Chair. The minutes of .the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following tenders were opened and- considered. No. 1 contract, Opihi Yalley road, Leary, L 223. 14s 6d ; Sugrue, Ll6O v p. Bracefiekl, L 136 13s 4d ; Herlihy, L 133 ; O’Brien, Llls (accepted.) The following correspondence was read and considered : From Messrs Tate and Hall 3 dated 9th January, enclosing the transfer of land from Whittaker and Jorgensen to the Board, and enclosing also bill of costs. Resolved, “ That the same be paid.” From Mr Tate, dated January 30th,, drawing tlie Board’s attention to the election of a member for the Timaru Har- ' hour Board on the 10th February. Resolved, “That the «lerk attend to the same.” From the Secretary to the Marine Department, Wellington, dated 23rd Jan., >' re the election of a member for the Mil-, ford Harbour Board The clerk was instructed to acknow-. ledge the receipt of the letter. From Mr E. P. Sealey, dated February Ist, asking on what principle the valua-. tion of his property is based, to enable him to divide the payment of rate with his brother. ‘‘ desolved, !l That the clerk explain the principle to him.” From the Manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, dated 10th January re tender for fixed deposit. From the Secretary to the Treasurer, dated 2nd January, 1879, informing the Board that the sum of L 93 Is 7d had been paid into the Board’s account, being share of L 620 10s 5d at credit of the separate account of the County of Geraldine on the 13th ult. Resolved, “That the clerk acknowledge the receipt of same.” From the clerk of the Ashburton County Council, dated 16th January, requesting the Board to allow conditions of lease of the Rangitata traffic bridge ferry to be on view at the Road Board office. Granted. From the Secretary of the County Council, Ashburton, dated January 6th, re the Rangitata ferry. Resolved, “That the clerk reply that this Board is willing to contribute a sum of L2O on condition that the Temuka Road Board contribute a similar amount. > v Also, that the clerk write to the Temuka f Road Board with reference to the same.” From Mr Thomas Hardcastle and others, dated 3rd February, requesting the Board to form the road leading towards Rhubarb Flat. Resolved, “ That tenders be called for same.” From J. O livi. r E q.. District Auditor, dated January J7 l 1*, R>79, requesting the books, vouchers and a (.aunts, of the
Board to be ready for bis audit < n Thursday, the 30th January. The clerk stated that the accounts had been passed and certified to by the auditor, and laid fhe cash book and contractors’ deposit book upon the table for the Board’s information.
From J. Ollivier Esq., District Auditor, dated January 30th, making certain suggestions as to the preparation of the vouchers by the overseer. Also stating that he had examined the accounts of the Board for the year 1878, and found the
• same to be correct. Resolved, That the suggestion of the auditor be carried out.” From Mr John Mee, dated 3rd Feb. 1879, asking for particulars of Mr S. R. k ItPMeekin’s property for last year. Resolved, “Th at as the collector obtained a judgment against Mr S. R. M'Meekin last Court day, a warrant be issued at once.” From the Ashburton County Council dated January 13, enclosing Mr Higginsom’s report upon the necessary repairs at the Rangitata traffic bridge. From Mr Joseph Noble and a number of ratepayers, dated February 3rd, informing the Board of the bad state of the roads in the Woodbury township, and declining to pay any more rates unless the roads were improved. Mr Noble also waited upon the Board personally, to support the application for roads. Resolved, “ That the Board cannot entertain the application on account of the roads referred to not being public roads in terms of the Act.” Mr Joseph Webb asked for an extension of one month’s time to complete his contract near the Roman Catholic Church. One month’s extension granted. From JJessrs Matthews and Trezise, dated February 3rd, requesting that the road be formed from the big cutting to the Opihi river. The application was granted. From Mr John Sugrue, asking an extension of one month’s lime to complete his contract on Wilson’s road. Granted. From Mr John Cooper, dated February 4th, asking compensation for loss of time in getting materials supplied by the Board in carrying out his contract—painting Geraldine bridge. Resolved, “ That as Mr Meudelson had failed to fulfil his guarantee of supplying material to the Board, an application he made to him for the amount claimed, LI 155.” From Mr Mendelson, dated January 31st, objecting to his valuation. From the Registrar of the Estates Department, dated January 25th, stating that reserves 696 and C 97 in Geraldine township will he open to be leased next week. From Mr C. Bowker, dated 20th Jan., objecting that he was charged the rates on certain properties which lie had sold. The overseer’s report was read and considered. Mr Wigley waited upon the Board with reference to a portion of road in Beautiful Valley being reduced as to grade. Resolved, That the overseer report upon the same.” Mr Robert Taylor had an interview with the Board, requesting the Board to form the road near Cross’s house. Resolved, That the overseer report upou the same.” The following resolutions were passed ufc different stages of the silting : Resolved, “ That the clerk give notice C • Mr Thomas Millard to leave the house £, lf ind shop in fourteen days.” Resolved, “That the clerk examine the pound keeper’s book, and certify if correct.” The pound keeper handed in a cheque for L 7 Os 4d, for sale of cattle out of pound. Resolved, That the clerk write to the Secretary for Public Works re the Rangitata traffic bridge, the repairs being required on the north side of the river, and altogether in the Ashburton County, requesting to be informed whether the Geraldine Road Board is deemed liable for its proportion of the cost of same, and if so, drawing the attention of the Government to the, fact that the Ashburton County Council are now carrying out the repairs contrary to the report of their engineer, Mr Higginson, and stating that this Board beg to protest against their action in the matter’.” Resolved, “That the clerk also send a copy of the foregoing resolution to the Ashburton County. Council.” Proposed by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr De Renzy and carried, “That an application having been made to form the road running between sections 17795 and 1779 G, Messrs Ford and Newton, and Mr J. H. Wigley, be again asked to replace the road pegs ploughed up by them, and unless the same is done by the first day of March legal action will be taken.” Accounts to the amount of L 931 Is 6d were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned.
