GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, the 7th January, m the Road Board office, Geraldine Present— Mr W. Postlethwaito (chairman), Messrs Hay, Do Renzy, Slack, and Flatnmu. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Matthews had an interview with the Board, asking for the water to be turned into its natural course in McCormick’s land instead of running through his property. Resolved that the overseer get the work done. Thc : following tenders for drain pipes were opened and considered J. Mendelson —Gin., 11RI; 9in., Is lOd; 12in., 2s 10R1. J. B. Sheath—tin., 6d ; Gin., lOd ; 9in., Is 8d ; 12in., 2s 8d ; loin., -Is Gd ; ISin., Os. John Jackson —Gin., Is ; Din. Is 8d ; 12in., 2s 8d (accepted). For cement :—■ J. Mendelson—2ss per cask, delivered at Geraldine ; 23s 6d, at Orari; 235, at Pleasant Point. John Jackson—23s per cask, delivered at Orari (accepted). Accounts to the amount of L 961 3s Id were passed for payment. The Board adjourned till after the meeting of ratepayers, when Messrs Postlethwaito, Flat-man, and Hay were present. Mr FTatman was voted to the chair pro. tom. Proposed by Mr Hay, seconded by Mr Flatman —That Mr Win. Postletliwaite be elected the Chairman of the Board pro. tom. Resolved —That lewt. carbolic acid be obtained for sanitary purposes, and the sanitary meeting to be held on Thursday, IGth Jan. Resolved—That Mr Andrews be requested to report upon the sanitary state of the Geraldine township. The following correspondence was read and considered :

From Gripp and Jorgensen, dated 7tli January, requesting an extension of time to finish Contract No. T 4. Resolved that one month he granted. Fi*om O. P. M’Calhuu, dated 2Gth December, 1878, requesting the Board to construct a culvert near Fox’s. The clerk to reply the required work is on private property, therefore the Board cannot deal with it.

From Mr James Butcher, dated January Gth, informing the Board that he is prepared to give L2O per annum for the Geraldine Bound. Clerk to reply the pound is already rented and tenders lunie never been called for.

From Mr J. L. Wilson, dated 20th Dec., with reference to the costs incurred in getting the impounded land fund. The clerk to reply the Geraldine Road Board will bo happy to pay its proportion of the costs. From the Ashburton County Council, dated January Gth, with reference to continuing the lower ferry at the Fangitata, and askinc

if the ferry is needed, and what amount of subsidy should bo paid. Resolved—That the clerk reply that owing to several members having left the Board room prior to the receipt of the letter its consideration was deferred until the next meeting. Proposed by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Slack—That every sixth defaulter re payment of rates be sued on and after the 20th day of January, 1879, and the balance to be sued at the following sitting of the Court, and that Mr Sherratt bo instructed to see the same carried out.

The overseer’s report was read and considered.

Resolved—That the contractors on the road to Dean's!muse be urged to, push on witli their work, as no extension of time will be allowed. (2.) That tenders be invited for gravelling the following roads; —From Patrick’s to Connolly’s; one mile of Opihi river bed road ; Waihi Rush road ; Slack’s gate to Slack’s valley); and the Beautiful Valley road, from Kakahu river to end of Oregon's contract. (3.) That the new Board deal with the forming and gravelling of the roads from Kakahu river to Skinner’s terrace, and from Fox’s road to Kakahu river on the boundary road. The Board then adjourned.
