When Sir John Coode was in the colony Ihe Government communicated with him as to the best method of further testing the value of the iron sand of Taranaki, and it was agreed that on his return to England he should consult Dr Siemens, who is perhaps the foremost practical metallurgist of the age. Two hundredweight, of sand was sent home with ins J ructions that everything connected with its manufacture should be carefully noted and compared with similar manufactures at h'onm. The following correspondence will be read with the ■ greater interest -when it is remembered that good coal has recently been discovered on the Mekau, a navigable river, on both sides of whose mouth the sands are found as well as at New Plymouth. 5, Westminster Chambers, London. I enclose a copy of his reply, and could much wish that the result had been more immediately cucourayiny. Wo must, however, hope that the development of the coal resources of Now. Zealand will in lime bring about the profitable employment of the metals which this sand contains. You wil ! see from the last paragraph in Dr Siemcu’s loiter that he is under a misapprehension in supposing that friends of mine contemplated embarking in a commercial speculation. This, however, is of no moment, but I attach great weight to his opinion, and believe with him, that in the present state of the iron and steel
