CRICKET.

The match between Married and Single players of Temuka commenced on Saturday afternoon. There had been more talk about this match than about any previous one, yet at the last moment there seemed a good chance of its falling through. Luckily, however, it did not, for a very lively game was played last Saturday, which is to be followed by a game which will no doubt be equally or more lively next Saturday. The Singles, captained by A. E, Cox, went first to tbe wickets, and made a total of 76. The bowling of Barker, Rogers, and Brown for the Married was good, only Roberts and Wood being able to do anything with it. The latter played very well indeed for his 25. For the Married men Brown made 18 and Hunt 21, both by very steady play. The faster bowling and inferior long-stopping of the single team gave a lot of byes to their opponents. Considerable excitement was manifested towards (he end of the married men’s innings. It became known to the field that their scor; was approaching a tK and great efforts were made to prevent its reaching that consummation. These were made in vain, and amid great cheering from the assembled Benedicts their score was carried by byes up to, and one, two, three beyond that of, the bachelors. As it was now too late to think of playing two more innings, and neither side desiring to make a drawn game, it was decided to complete the match next Saturday afternoon.
