The Temuka Leader. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1878.
Thk elections of the ui"rn !v rs of t Geraldine Comity Gonm-il arc n"W over, and we think the (dor tors have exorcised a Aviso discretion in electiny genii - men who are in favor of the adoption of the whole Act. The only changes ere in the Gera’dino and Mount Pc 1 Road Imards. where two in fn-or of giving tiie Act a trial are returned instead of two that Were against it. We believe the nr-inhers now elected, one and all, have hut one object in vu w —how best to advance the interests of the whole county. Much has been said about extravagant expenditure in salaries, buildings, etc. We do not sec the necessity f-r building at all. Convenient places for bolding the C->uueTs nr'efngs can be easily obtained, and we think-it premature to talk (if expanding m mey on buildings. Possible great changes ma v take place bef re the end of another session of Parliament. The qu stum of the separation of the two islands is now di-rnssed nmre fearlessly than formerly, and it is not impossible s-mara-tion may come about sooner than some think, the .North .’island is now, thanks to the south, in possession of a land fund, which must increasewhilcoursmust
decrease, and so soon as tVs is shown to he a fret by the settlers in the North Island, aml especially when they see that all the wool is taken off the hack of the carcase in the foutli, so soon will they join in the cry from the extreme end of the South for separation. When this comes about what middle party will h; nine to prevent their carrying out their wishes ? With this in view, we look upon the Comity Councils as to some extent a tentative measure. As to salaries, we have given our opinion already against expending large sums in this direction, and are still of the same mind. The meniln- ts how elected are : Messrs M‘lntos!i and Acton for the Levels ; Air Ostler for Mount Cook ; Messrs Wilson and Mendelson for lemnka ; Air llaivlcastie for Geraldine, and Air Tr pp for Alount Peel. Air Hardcastle and Air Tripp are. now elected to scats in the Council for the first tinv. The otic rs have served before. A majority of the members are in favour of bringing the Act into torce.
