Mr J. P. Hydes’ Burlesque Company, who gave an entertainment in the Volunteer Hall on Thursday night, are really very clever. Their first appearance in Tcmukn was certainly not made under favorable cireumslances. The greatest disadvantage they labored under uas (he smallness of the attendance— actors are few Avho can play Avell to empty benches. Another disadvantage was the lack of suitable scenery and properties. The costumes Avere so good as to seem entirely out of place amid such dull surroundings. Nevertheless, the two pieces presented, the comedietta “Checkmate” and a mad burlesque of “II Trovatore,” went very well, and were intensely enjoyed by the ferv present.
Mr Young informs us that the 500 young trout entrusted to his care have been safely placed in Ids water-race at Winchester. Only four were found to bo dead out of the whole number. This fortunate result is owing in a great measure to the energy of Sir Young, who lost no time in placing them in the water after getting them from the train.
The T.R.Y. mustered well at the inspection parade last night, and were practised for some time in various movements and evolutions by Captain Young. Wo trust that our local corps will be able to hold their own in efficiency and smartness at Dunedin. No doubt the trip will be of infinite service to those who go, as the emulation engendered by a general review must make them alivejto any shortcomings and anxious to remove them.
