THE ROYAL MARIONETTES.
(to the editor of the temuka leader ) Sir,— My attention has been called to a m st scurrilous article upon the performance of the above 0 mipany in the ‘New Zealand Sun ’on the. 24th Oct. last. It appears that Mr Webb has excited the wraih of the ‘New Zealand Sun ’ in some manner unknown to any person but the mau who hides himself behind a screen and calls himself the editor. The public must recollect he is supposed to be the exponent of public opinion, but in reality it is only his own. The Press is a mighty engine when properly worked, but publications of a limited circulation, chiefly among Tohnny and Jerry shops, rarely influence persons of refined mind, and elevated taste. Few persons see the ‘ New Zealand Sun,’ and of these, those who were present at the entertainment last evening in the Temuka Volunteer Had will bear witness with the rest of the public to the excellence of the entertainment, and the respectable manner in 'which all the Company performed their respective parts, deserving what they received, repeated bursts of applause. Did the writer of the article ever see a pantomime before? If so he will know that in the Tommy and Sarah business the omission of the aspirate is suitable to the character, and meant only in burlesque. Never has there been a performance that was more appreciated in this locality than that of the Royal Marionette Company. I fancy the writer in the ‘Sun ’ had no free ticket, and this galled him. Did he ever see Mr Webb in the performance ? If he did not how could he know it was Mr Webb ? I can say his hedication his knot hequal to mine. Yours truly, iESGHYLUS.
