THE LATE FLOODS AT KAIAPOI.
The settlers on the upper part of t ie Kaiapoi Island have suffered very s verely in the loss of land, stock, and crops by the late flood. It is estimated that about 250 acres of land l ave V«-n entirely washed away, and between 2000 and 3000 acres of good land depreciated in value. In some places three to four feet cf sand has been deposited on the H nc b and in others the soil has been washed off Mr Storer, one of the oldest settlers, has his block of 90 acres reduced to a dozen acres. Mr Belcher has lost 74 out of a block of 185 acres, and Mr Ellis lias altogether lost sixty of his 200 acre faim. The North Toad was about four feet under water, and the railway at Stewart s was flooded to a depth of five feet. Ihe country round there was all under water, and the river reached to wittiin eighteen inches of the girders of the railway bridge. The inhabitants of Kaiapoi were much alarmed for the safety of their protective embankment, and turned out with drays and tools to increase its strength, and they happily succeeded in preventing a breach. The railway has suffered considerably. Embankments are washed away, and two piles and several crossbraces of the railway bridge are gone.
