English cablegrams state that on the sth inst. a Cabinet Council was summoned to discuss the Affghan question. No definite conclusion was arrived at, but the Government undertook to support the Governor-General of India. A large reinforcement was to leave England to augment the forces selected for service in Afghanistan. The Ameer was making great preparations, and was encouraged
by the Russian press. On October 7 the war commenced, the British capturing the fortress of Alimassum after a severe conflict. The British commissariat is defective
