Temuka Leader Office, October 8. The first Temuka Stock Fair was held yesterday. A number of extraneous circumstances combined to render this first fair less successful than it might have been fairly expected to be. Other public sales were held on the same day both north and south, and consequently buyers did not muster in force. There were three entries, totalling 64 head of cattle, chiefly young stock, and two entries totalling 135 sheep. These were offered by Mr D. Maclean in nine lots, but ,most of the lots were bought in, offers not reaching sellers prices. One young cow in milk was sold for L 7, and two others for L 6 8s each. Some of the young stock changed hands privately after the public sale. The auctioneer, in opening the sale, said it was a pity that the fair had been fixed for a day that caused it to clash with other country sales. The committee had not foreseen this, but the fair suffered in consequence of it. He had no doubt of its ultimate success. It rested a good deal with the people of the district to make it a success, and he felt certain they would see it would be to their interest to do so. Better notice would he given of the next monthly sale, and lie would promise on behalf of his firm that they would have a pretty heavy lot of. stock entered for it. He hoped the fair would continue, and be successful. . GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET. The ‘Timaru Herald’ of Tuesday reports : Grain market inactive. Wheat still a drug, heavy stocks being on hand.
