[Per Hero at Auckland.] Melbourne, Sept. 4. Dr Ryan, of Plevna renown, has been entertained at a dinner. An illuminated address to Earl Beaconsfleld, bound in morocco, goes home by the mail. A meeting of the New Guinea Colonists Association Agency, resolved that further agitation was necessary to secure annexation to Victoria. Hopes are entertained of better prespects when bottom is reached. The expedition is recovering in health. Sydney, Sep 4. The proposal to join Victoria in a subsidy of the Cape line of steamers was talked over in the Cabinet, but no definite decision come to. The Rev Mr Spurgeon’s son has been summoned to England owing to the illness of his mother. He cannot, therefore, ▼isitNew Zealand. New Caledonian advices report that about 150 insurgents have been- killed. A number of people are ready to start for New Guinea at their own "expense, provided the Dutch Government will permit settlement, and England, will annex part of the island Brisbane, Sept 4. The latest news from Port Moresby, New Guinea, report that the prospectors are out trying new country. The rivers are falling. The natives in arras in New Caledonia are still undefeated. The friendly tribes are in a state of disquiet, and fears are entertained for the firiendly chief Regene, who has rendered good service, and who has disappeared for several days. The war will cost an immense amount of money. The frontier is being surrounded with block-houses.
[Per Tararua at the Bluff.] Melbourne, Sep. 6. A sheep sale last week realised about L 25,000. The sales of one farm alone amounted to over LII,OOO. The weather has been very close for this time of the year. The Land Tax Commission is now sit ting, and nearly 140 appeals ase to be dealt with. Betting on the Melbourne Cup has been very dull lately, owing to the absence of the ring at Sydney. Auckland has been backed for large amounts.
