[Per Press Agency.] Auckland, Aug. 28. The Thames Gas Company declared a dividend of eight per cent. Major Gordon, formerly staff commander of the Auckland Volunteer's, has received his telegraphic appointment to a similar position in Otago. He was just leaving for Levuka. Wellington, Aug. 28.
Press messages, consisting in the aggregate of over seventy-six thousand words, were sent from the Wellington office during one day last week.
The ‘ Gazette’ notifies the division of the Borough of Timaru into four wards. Aug 30. Mr Sheehan will make Ins Statement on Native Matters on Tuesday. Dunedin, Aug 28. The Mayor to-day received a telegram from the Governor accepting his invitation to be present at the Dunedin banquet. The Mayor and Coencil leave for Oamaru next Wednesday evening, and will proceed to Christchurch next day to attend the banquet. August 29. The Christchurch Football team last night kicked over a coffee stall, the owner being in it at the time. Acting on a hint given in one of the morning papers, they compensated the keeper of the stall to day. The principal buildings in Dunedin will be illuminated on the arrival of the northern visitors. The Mayor intends to request the shopkeepers to keep their establishments open on that night. Timaru, Aug. 29. The Engineer of the Harbour Board has condemned 500 casks of cement imported here by Guthrie and Larnach, the contractors for the supply of cement for the Breakwater. It was landed ox beautiful Star.
Christchurch, Aug‘29. At a meeting of the Board of Governors to-day, it was resolved to open the additions to the Museum on Tuesday, and ask His Excellency to be present. A contract has been let for extensive additions to the Kaiapoi wool factory. August 30.
A fire broke out this morning at five o’clock in Manchester-street, destroying four shops—occupied by Green, draper ; Alexander, pawnbroker ; Hymns, general dealer; and Shannon, bookseller. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and a whole row of buildings was only saved by a party wall of brick, insured to extent of L 1550. Several of the firement were a good deal injured through falling rafters. At a meeting of the Selwyn County Council to-day it was stated that Government had handed over the Malvern Waterworks to the County. Invercargill, Aug. 20.
The sale of Quinn’s property on the Limestone Plains was effected to-day to J, M. Mitchell for Stevenson, of North Taieri, for £9OOO ; also, Quinn’s Otautau farm to Ward, for £I6OO, and the Kenanino farm to Roberts and Co., for £lOls.

Austria has notified to the Porte that unless the convention is signed she will recall her Ambassador from Constantinople and annex Bosnia and Herzegovina by right of conquest. Montenegro, Servia, and Greece protest against Arrstria. President MacMahon intimates the willingness of France to allow England to annex the Holy Land.
