Army Suspends Procedure For Remedial Treatment
Auckland, Aug. 29. An explanation of the present position affecting men recommended for treatment to -make them fit to undertake a soldier's duties was given by the army yesterday when referring to a statement made by a member of the No. 1 (Auckland) Armed Forces Appeal Board on Wednesday. The rema-k made to a reservist at a sitting of The board was to the effect that he did not have to undergo remedial treatment and that he could not be punished for refusing to do so. In amplification of these remarks it is stated that an instruction was issued some days ago to the effect that the procedure concerning medical treatment was under consideration and the existing instructions with regard to compulsory medical and dental treatment were held up in the meantime. This did not apply to vaccination or inoeulation. The new instruction stated that while the present procedure was in suspension reservists could refuse to undertake treatment and were not to be prosecuted for their action. However. their attitude would not Drevent their entrv into the forces, for thev could he drafted to camo and assigned to duties they could fulfil in spite of a disability.
