True Victtory Impossible If War Is Prolonged
London, Aug. 30. The prophets of a long drawn out war are attacked by Mr. J. u. Garvin in the Sunday Express. Some observers regard his criticism as a reply to statements made by Sir Earle Page, who forecash that the war would last 10 years. Mr. Garvin says: "Some witnesses, neither uninformed nor irresponsible, begin to speak of a seven years or ten years war. That fatalistic conception xnust be banished from our minds and shunned like the pestilence. That vague notion of victory indefinitely deferred until 1950 or near it would bring a creeping lethargy into democratic counsels. The war for the world might end for the democracies in a dull 1 catastrophe of stalemate. "Not for a moment dare we stomach the theory of a dragging conflict. From now on war plannhtg and war waging must have two definite objects; "First, nothing less than absolute victory, .both in arms and peace. VSecond, to shorten the war. If Rusaia liolds for two months the United Nations can triumph within two years."
