Meatless Day a Week Proposed In America
Washington, Aug. 29. President Roosevelt saidv to-day that the Government was considering instituting one meatless day each week. This would enable the shipping of most of the meat for United Nations soldiers from the United States . instead of Australia and South America. The plan would make between 30 and 40 Allied ships available to haul war necessities throughout the world war theatres where they would be vitally needed. . . Asked if the plan would have . atty ill-effect on the economy of Australia and New Zealand, the president replied in the negative. He explained that he had discussed with Mr. Fraser the methods which might be employed in britigLng food supplies. At present many ships carrying military supplies to Australia and New Zealand might bring back a larger amount of food, and alternatively more food might be stored.
