Axis reports activity at the Rock.
. . " London, Aug. 30. Concurrent with reports. from Stockholm. that a German division is already going to Dakar to implement German demands for a stronger defence of West Africa the Axis radios are playing up reports of activity at Gibraltar. The Rome radio says that one transport alone landed 3500 men at Gibraltar and added that R.A.F. planes throughout the day were flying over Gibraltar and coastal defence exercises were being carried out, while large bodies of troops were practishig landings. The Vichy radio quot-sd an Algeciras report to the effect that several British transports had arrived at Gibraltar . and landed 3000 garrison reinforcements. Vichy also reported that Admiral Esteva, commander of the French force in Tunis, arrived at Vichy and conferred with Marshal Petain and M. Laval. Dr. Goebbels has arrived in Venice. The Vichy news agency stated that a British convoy comprising 26 merchantmen left Gibraltar sailing in the direction of the Atlantic.
