Effects Vary In Lifting Of Lighting Ban
Taranaki controllers examine recent orders. Orders issued recently easing lighting restrictions in some places will not make any difference at New Plymouth, according to Mr. W. H. Huggett, lighting controller. Action in other Taranaki towns will vary according to their distance from the sea. "All street lights and all other outside lights visible from the harbour are to be shrouded so that each source and its container cannot be seen from any part of the harbour," he said last night in pointing out that New Plymouth, being a coastal town, was still subject to stringent lighting regulations. "Some people appear to believe the rules have been eased, for they have been lifting their blinds," Mr. Huggett said, "but there has been no easing, and I intend to ask wardens to check their districts to ensure that windows are covered as in the past. He pointed out that windows that can be seen from the sea must be made completely light proof, while others must have the blinds drawn. Eltham considered the lighting position in that town yesterday afternoon when a committee of the borough council conferred with Mr. B. H. Goldsmith. lighting controller. The Mayor, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., said afterwards that in all probability lighting under verandahs would be restored to normal, but
street lights would remain as at present, with shades. Final decisions on those points would rest with the borough council, however. Stratford Eases Restrictions. Though it is an inland town. Eltham is at a geographical disadvantage compared with Stratford. Sky glow from the borough would be visible from the sea, whereas Stratford has Mt. Egmont between it and the sea. Stratford, therefore, has been able to ease its restrictions. Several weeks ago Mr. N. H. Moss, chief Emergency Precautions Service controller. conferred with Mr. A. E. Pollock, lighting controller, about the new lighting order affecting inland towns and arrangements were made immediately for street lights to be restored, except for minor shades, community lighting to be made fully operative. For some. weeks now the Stratford town area has reverted to almost normal lighting until 11 p.m., when the community lights are turned off. At Hawera improved street lighting is permitted under the amended regulatinns. hnt. no altaratinn oan be made to
shop-window lighting, according to the lighting controller, Mr. J. Lythgoe. Mr. Lythgoe pointed out to a recent meeting of the Hawera E.P.S. that Waitotara, Patea, Hawera, Waimate West, Egmont, Taranaki and Clifton counties were included in the No. 8 area in which for 12 miles inland from the sea the lighting restrictions at present in force outside periods of emergency were to continue.
