Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, Aug. 29. The Paymaster-General and Minister of Reconstruction, Sir William Jowitt, C-ord Burghley, who is controller of American supplies in the Ministry of Aircraft Production, Sir George Courthope and Admiral Sir Aubrey Smith, who is a former aide de camp to His Majesty, were among 15 defendants summonsed at a special court at Ganterbury on a charge of obtaining rationed foodstuffs for animals in excess of the authorised quantity. The prosecutor said he had come to the conclusion that the defendants neither knew nor realised they were receiving grain in excess of the coupon value. Sir William Jowitt's farm, for instance, was being conducted by a manager, and similar circumstances applied to the other defendants. Sir William was fined £15, Lord Burghley £1, Sir George Courthope £2 and Sir Aubrey Smith 10s.
