Grave situation develops as result of fresh enemy landing.
London, Aug. d(J. 'J'HE Allied position in the Milne Bay area of New Guinea has sharply deteriorated in the past few hours. Following the arrival of a Japanese cruiser and eight destroyers in the bay on Friday, enemy reinforcements were landed. Australian forces immeditaely engaged the Japanese shock troops. The situation was at first encouraging but it is now grave. The enemy has succeeded in forcing a way into the jungle and is challenging the Australians' hold on the whole of the Milne Bay area. The enemy reinforcements were, landed under cover of extremely bad weather and attempts to attack the ships from the air failed. Even reconnaissance craft had difficulty in operating.
