Producers' Works Has Best Two Years For N.P. Shipping
War makes for more economic arrangements. The past two years have been the best regarding shipping in the history of the Taranaki Producers Freezing Works Company Ltd. This was due entirely to the service given by the mercantile marine, to which they owed a debt of gratitude for the way in which the produce had been lifted, stated Mr. L. J. Rundle, chairman of directors, at the annual meeting yesterday. It had taken the war, Mr. Rundle said, to teach them that it was not economic to have Home boats travelling up and down the coast of New Zealand to pick up 4000 or 5000 crates of cheese and 4000 or 5000 boxes of butter. Over recent years the number of ships lifting produce had declined substantially, but an even greater amount of produce had been lifted. The manqer in which it had been handled, reflected credit on the staff both at the works and at the wharf. Though the total quantity of produce received last year was not as large as the previous year, Mr. Rundle continued, in the aggregate the company had handled in and out a very large amount of produce. Appreciation of services given by the mercantile marine was shown by members, when it was unanimously decided to vote £25 to a fund for entertainment of members of the service, the money to be used at the discretion of the directors.
