Age Benefit Enlargement Favours Seasonal Worker
Press Assn.
Wellington, Last Night.
A further enlargement of the scope of the age benefit section of the Social Security Act is contained in emergency regulations in to-night's Gazettc. The new regulations provide that, when the period of employment during which the age beneficiary has not received a benefit ceases, the earnings of the beneficiary may be exempted under the income section of the Act when application is made fpr a renewal of a benefit. The Minister of Social Security, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated to-night that the new provision largely benefited the seasonal worker. While benefiting age benefioiaries generally, the regulations removrd particularly somewhat of a handicap from the seasonal worker from a standpoint of earnings when, on the cessation of his period of employment, he applied for reinstatement of age benefit. The regulations would also facilitate, under the policy of the Govemment, reabsorption of physically fit age beneficiar'es into industry.
