Attack Upon Guadalcanal Driven Back
Japanese ships damaged increase to 14. Washington, Aug. 26. The United States Navy Department issued a second communique to-night on the great Sqlomons battle in which it described the situation as encouraging . A Japanese attack on Guadalcanal was repulsed with very heavy losses. In addition to a cruiser previously reported to be burning fiercely United States marine and naval aircraft hit six other ships approaching Guadalcanal and left them ablaze. The enemy force then withdrew. This brings the total Japanese ships damaged in this action to 14. Yesterday United States fighters shot down seven Japanese bombers and five Zero fighters for the loss of only one of their own. In Sunday afternoon's action in which 21 enemy planes were shot down the American losses were three. News of successes against Japanese air and naval forces also comes from the New Guinea area. In an air attack on Buna 13 Japanese aircraft on the ground were set ablaze and a number of barges also set on fire. Allied planes attacking a small enemy convoy off New Guinea destroyed one gunboat and damaged several transports. One Allied plane was lost.
