Russian Armies Continue Retreat In The Caucasus
Rec. 11.35 p.m. London, Aug. 27. The Moscow correspondent of the Daily Telegraph reports that the Russians are still retreating across the Kuban River ! in the Caucasus, where the Germans j have established tank and air superiority. The Vichy radio declares the Germans in the North Caucasus have reached Krasnaya, on the Rostov-Baku railway. South of Krasnodar the Russians have thrown back German attacks Soviet troops now occupy natural defence j lines in the hills covering Novorossisk and Tuapse. Heavy fighting is going on I to the east. where the Germans are Imaking a double drive in the Prohladnaya. aren, south-east to the Grozny oilfields and south to the military highway over the Caucasus mountair.s. The Red Star reports that despite huge losses the Germans in the region of | Prohladyana continue to advance. Fierce battles are raging. The Russian j Sea of Azov fieet and marines are challenging the Germans on a large part of | the eastern shores of the Sea of Azov. | Pravda reports that guerrillas continue to gain successes in the Ukraine. ! One detachment dislodged the Germans from 32 villages and killed 69 ofBcers, including two generals, also about 930 | other ranks. Another detachment killed 890 Germans and a third detachment ( killed 213 police and 1300 troops. Guerrillas now control the whole area.
