Springfield Globe At Stud

The Australian-bred pacer Springlieid Globe will do stud duty at Mr. \V. T. Lowe's establishment this season. In thc New Year he will probably he returned to R. B. Berry to be trained for further contcsts. He was lcased about two years ago by Berry, and has raced with conspicuous success in New Zealand. In point of merit Springfield Globe is ctose on the heels of Joscdale Grattan, champion two miler of last season. After winning several races in the Commonwealth, including an inter-Dominion championship, he was brought to New Zealand, showing great speed and stamina. He gave the flrst taste of quality by running second to Gold Bar in the National Handicap at Addington and at New Brighton in October turned the tables on his rival in the A. J. Rattray Handicap. At Addington fn November he gave 16 good paccrs up to 36 yards over two miles and beat them easily in 4m 15 4-5s. The feature of his performance was his ability lo sprint round his fleld in Ihe early stages to be with the ieader nine furlongs from home, and tlien to come on and win comfortnbly. Later lie won the Milson Stakes in muri and beat Gold Bar and Nelson Eddy in a mile and a quarter race at Timaru. Springfield Globe is by Globr Derby champion sire of Australia, from Ayr, wliich was bred at Durhar Lodge, Asliburton. Glohe Derby's family have produced a line of champions, nnd all of them have in turn sircd great horses. Among them are Lawn Derby, lm 59 2-5s; Van Derby, 2m 0 2-5 s ; Logan Derby, 4m 14 4-5s; New Derby, 2m 3s; Evicus, 2m 3 3-5s; and Qur Globe. Pakuranga Winner Rehandicapped. Mr. H. Coyle has rehandicapped Aguilo in the Waihi Handicap at the combined hunt ciubs' meeting at Hawera on Saturday from 8.10 to 9.2. Beneficial Runs. Minority was one of the unlucky runners in tlie August Handicap at Riccarton, iinishing fast for third after meeting with interfcrence. He is in the nine furlongs Halcombe Memorial at the combined meeting at Hawera and under 8.8 should go ciose lo winning. Hurdling Coreer. The Awapuni traincr, C. J. Thomson, who trains the National Hurdles winner Kenascor, may start Circular Note off on his hurdling carccr at Hawera. The Paper Moncy gelding lost all form on the tlat but, with his speed, he has only to take a liking to thc gamc to make good over the battcns. National Hurdles Records. The G ra nd National Hurdles was flrst run in 1890, when Ixion won. The race was run over (wo miles until 1915, when the distanre was increased to two and n-quarter miles, and the following year Increased again io two miles and a-hulf. Record Reign, 12.12 ( 1 900 > liolds the record for wcight-carrying, Morning (1913) holds the timo record, 3m 44 2-5s, for two miles, and since the race has been run over the present distance (two miles and a-lialf and 100 yards) Huntique (4m 40s) has tlie fastest time. Llbcralor (1893 and 1894), Gladful (1921 and 1922), Jolly Bcggar (1935 und 1936), and Padishah (1938 and 1939) are the only horses lo have won the race Iwice. A. E. Ellis, who. won on Penury Rosc (1925), Wharneliffe (1927), Padishah (1938 and 1939), aud The Dozcr (1941), holds thc rtding record. Ellis did not have a mount this year.
