Death of Mr. J. A. Batten

The death of Mr. J. A. Batten occurred at his home, Westown, New Plymouth, at the age of 76 year s. Ife was the second son of the late James and Mary Ann Batten, who were early pioneers. Mr. Batten was toucated at the Kent Road school, later serving on its committee for many years. In addition to farming he was for 10 years county foreman and at one time worked with the Survey Department. Latterly his keen interest in gardening led him to work each winter at nearby nurseries. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mesdames S. Jury, K. Bayly, S. Pryke and J. Street, all of New Plymouth, and by a son, Private E. J. Batten, who went overseas with the N.Z.E.F. and who has not been heard of since the campaigii in Greece.
