Festival Judge Gives High Praise To Hawera Singer
Large audiences attended the second day of the festival conducted by the Hawera Competitions Society yesterday, when the first elocution elasses in the festival were heard. The performances of competitors in the operatic and sacred song elasses showed a standard which exceeded his expectations, said the adjudicator for the instrumental aind vocal elasses, Mr. S. Oliver. He made special reference to the performance of the winner of the sacred song class. Miss NoelinC Death, whose rendition of a difficult song, "O Thou that Telleth Good Tidings." from the Messiah, was remarkable. Referring to one particular phrase Mr. Oliver said that, although he had heard this selection sung many times before, this was the first occasion that he remembered the performer accomplishing it in one breath. The present lack in New Zealand of wood wind players was also referred to by Mr. Oliver, who praised the standard displayed by entrants playing these instruments. There were some excellent entries in the Highland fling and hornnipe elasses, said the judge for daneing, Miss Lorraine Major, who also commented on individual performances. The standard in the elocution elasses was good. but not high, said Mrs. E. Culford Bell. The irnportance of speaking naiurally and with animation and suitable facial expressions was stressed.
